Yellowcard About To Meet Their Tour Opener

This summer, Yellowcard’s Ben Harper was looking to sign some new acts to his fledgling label, Takeover Records. There was only one problem: Being the guitar player in a successful rock band does not necessarily afford one the time necessary to check out up-and-coming acts at tiny clubs. So Harper had the bands come to him. And the “Sign My Band” contest was born. “The contest idea came around because we would collect demos from each city we went on Warped Tour, and we didn’t really have any time to follow up with the kids,” Harper said. “So we started… Read more »

Good Charlotte's Joel Madden Makes 8-Year-Old Cry

Hilary Duff is, after all, your girlfriend and, yes, you should stand up for her. But did you really have to bring small children to tears? According to a report on MTV.com, Madden – Good Charlotte lead singer and Duff’s current partner in love – was at a radio station’s Christmas show in New York last Friday when he was approached by two young autograph seekers. Duff quickly pointed out the problem – one of these boys was Cody, the kid brother of her arch-nemesis Lindsay Lohan! To sign an autograph for this completely uninvolved 8-year-old child would be like… Read more »

2004 Music Sales Echo '70s Sitcom

Merchants are describing this year’s holiday-season sales as a roller-coaster ride. That could hardly be said about the full-year sales experience. At least a roller coaster offers the contrast of intermittent highs and lows. Album sales started with one long rise toward a hopeful tally for the first eight months of 2004, followed by a steep decline that stole back most of the year’s advances in just a few weeks, as if a thrill ride had been designed by a party pooper who did not fully grasp the concept. But maybe a better analogy – as Ludacris replaces Jay-Z and… Read more »

Hoobastank Yanks Tour Dates

Hoobastank’s lead singer, Doug Robb, has a pretty good reason why he is canceling the remainder of the band’s December tour: pneumonia. The band’s label announced Robb is still ill with bronchial pneumonia Thursday, though the condition is not said to be serious. Robb’s management insists that the singer is on his way to a full recovery, despite a trip to the hospital over the weekend. He is expected to take the rest of the month off in order to recuperate at his home in Los Angeles. Some of the shows affected by the alt-rock singer’s illness include KROQ’s annual… Read more »

U2 Return To Bob Hewson's Stomping Grounds For Next Video

They endured unpredictable weather on a Spanish plain for their “Vertigo” video and traffic on the streets of New York for “All Because of You,” so U2 thought they were keeping it simple by shooting their next clip in a Dublin, Ireland, theater. That is, until they were put at the mercy of the venue’s Christmas production of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The group shot the video for the track “Sometimes You Can’t Make It on Your Own” on Monday at the Gaiety Theater, according to a band spokesperson. The theater, which is currently housing the children’s story production, gave… Read more »

Dimebag's Killer Was A Stranger In His Neighborly Hometown

MARYSVILLE, Ohio – In a small town where people greet you by name at Maggie’s Restaurant and where the guy who runs the local pawn shop will do what he can with your wife’s wedding ring because he knows you need the cash for Christmas, Nathan Gale was a stranger in plain view. His apartment at 111 1/2 E. Fifth St., half a block from the downtown shopping district’s single stoplight, put him right in the heart of this close-knit community of 16,000 residents. But even though he spent hours every day hanging out at the restaurant and tattoo parlor… Read more »

Hundreds Of Fans Gather To Honor Dimebag Darrell

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A small memorial started by a handful of fans blossomed into an outpouring of grief and celebration Thursday, less than 24 hours after the shocking slayings at the Alrosa Villa club where Pantera/ Damageplan guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott and three others were killed. Despite the rain and cold temperature, hundreds of fans gathered outside the weathered metal club to pay homage to their hero. They erected makeshift crosses, laid yellow roses in honor of Abbott’s Texas roots and burned candles in his honor, but mostly they shared stories, asked each other why anyone would do such a… Read more »

To BNL Or Not To BNL: The Ladies Go All Stratford In 2005

Barenaked Ladies … Shakespeare. If you think the two don’t go hand in hand, you may be a little miffed when cruising on by the Stratford Festival next year. The band will be helping out the Bard in Stratford’s ’05 season, creating the music for five songs pulled right from the text of As You Like It. “It’s hard to ask for a better co-writer,” singer Steven Page told the Torstar News Service. “Even if he is a little unbending in his approach to collaboration.” With Shakespeare’s centuries-old witticisms and the Ladies’ ‘90s Can-pop sounds, it should turn out to… Read more »
