Los Angeles – Bright Eyes principal Conor Oberst delivered a finished album to his label last February with an eye on a summer release, but then he had other ideas. He went back into the studio and recorded enough songs for a second set. Los Angeles – Last week, the two highest debuts on Hot 100 Singles Sales were by Bright Eyes, the musical invention of 24-year-old Nebraskan Conor Oberst. This week, those two singles, “Lua” and “Take It Easy (Love Nothing),” move 18-1 and 7-2, respectively, to take over the top two spots on the survey. Bright Eyes, Yo La Tengo, David Byrne, Keb’ Mo’ and Nawang Khechog will inject some new blood into the annual Tibet House Benefit Concert, set for Carnegie Hall in New York City on February 25th. Ray Davies and Philip Glass, the concert’s artistic director, are the only return performers from last year’s show. David Bowie, a perennial Tibet House performer, won’t make this year’s show, as he’s scheduled to tour Australia next month. The Shortlist Organization announced today the complete “Long List” of eighty-six nominations for the 2003 Shortlist Music Prize, as selected by a panel of “Listmakers” including Flea, Erykah Badu, Perry Farrell, Chris Martin (Coldplay), and the directors Spike Jonze and Cameron Crowe. The ten finalists for the award will be announced in early September, and the third annual Shortlist Music Prize will be presented at a multi-artist concert on October 16th at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles.
