Album Review: Fall Out Boy

Forget MySpace, viral nude pics, emo and eyeliner — Fall Out Boy has grander ambitions. With “Infinity on High,” a shamelessly melodic, wild and powerful pop record, the Chicago outfit has reinvented itself as the world’s biggest boy band. The set, which opens with an intro by Jay-Z, wraps catchy emo hooks around epic production employing huge harmonies, R&B grooves, samples and strings. But the real surprise is singer Patrick Stump, who explores his full vocal range and croons like a soulman. Fall Out Boy 2.0 is at its self-indulgent best on the funky “The Take Over, the Breaks Over”… Read more »

Backstreet Boys Back to Work

“From ’93 to 2001 we were going non-stop, and we finally got a chance to step back, reflect and really appreciate everything that happened to us,” Brian Littrell says of the Backstreet Boys’ two-year hiatus. The recharged quintet is recording the follow-up to 2001’s Black and Blue in various Los Angeles studios. The new songs feature a more mature sound for the teen pop idols. Ballads like “You Can Tell Me” and “Love Is” – co-written by Howie Dorough – exude an urban soul vibe a la Britain’s Craig David. And the Boys say the album will touch upon a… Read more »

Ballin' Boys No Good Ready To Come Off The Bench

When the Florida Marlins won the 1997 World Series, it was No Good’s remix of Luke Campbell’s “Raise the Roof” that blasted from the system at Pro Player Stadium. When the Miami Hurricanes won the national college football championship earlier this year, No Good’s “Ballin’ Boy” served as their theme song. As if that wasn’t enough to cement this particular sports-and-hip-hop connection, ESPN picked up “Ballin’ Boy” to play over its March Madness spots during this year’s NCAA hoops tournament. And No Good capped things off by performing the single – already a club staple in their hometown of Miami… Read more »
