Sum 41 Sober Up On Does This Look Infected?

When Sum 41 wrote last year’s All Killer No Filler, the bandmembers were all still in high school. Toilet-dunking bullies, drinking buddies, unrequited puppy love, impish practical jokes and weekend parties were what their lives consisted of, so that’s what the sang about. But now they’ve toured the world, experienced some real-life trauma and tapped into current events (at least a little bit), so the boys in the band – singer/guitarist Deryck Whibley, guitarist Dave Baksh, bassist Cone and drummer Steve Jocz – are in a slightly different place, and as a result they’re penning some harder, more sobering songs.… Read more »

Are Justin & Nick Ready To Go Solo? Ex-NKOTB, New Edition Members Weigh In

For every Joey McIntyre and Jordan Knight, there is a D-Fuse. If you’ve never heard of the now-defunct solo venture from their fellow New Kid on the Block Danny Wood, that’s proof enough that no matter how famous your boy band is, a solo career is never guaranteed. So with ‘NSYNC’s Justin Timberlake, Backtreet Boys’ Nick Carter and 98 Degrees’ Nick Lachey all releasing albums this fall, the pop world is wondering who will be “Larger Than Life” and who will go “Bye, Bye, Bye.” We asked a few former boy band stars who’ve enjoyed solo success to lend advice… Read more »

'Idol' sweet music to RCA

“American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson may have the magic to put RCA Records back on top. All the major record labels are pulling out their big-gun releases for the fourth quarter in hopes of hitting some high numbers to make up for the year’s extreme sales dip. RCA has been struggling overall because of a weak release schedule. The label has thus far scored hits only with Dave Matthews Band’s “Busted Stuff,” which has sold more than 1.2 million units, and critically acclaimed postpunk band the Strokes, whose “Is This It” has passed the half-million mark. Clarkson’s two-sided single release,… Read more »

Singer Smith Teased by 'Default'

Maybe it’s an honor to be considered a “cute rock star” in the teen magazines, but for new rock band Default, it’s a license to tease. Singer Dallas Smith has been noted for his looks by magazines like “Teen Beat.” Bassist Dave Benedict said when the other three members of the Canadian-based band found out, they all used the hockey slogan: “Game On!” “We all think it’s a pretty funny,” Benedict told The Associated Press. “He’s Dallas. He’s our buddy. We hang out with him every day. It’s just funny when you see your friend in there under ‘Hot Boys,’… Read more »

Britney Avoids Vice, Justin Talk, Anything New At Sin City Tour Opener – Review

In the city of sin, Britney Spears behaved. There was no dissing of Justin Timberlake during the opening night of the second leg of the Dream Within a Dream Tour. No cigarette smoking. No… whatever vice the rumor mills have her doing this week. Things may have changed in Britney’s well-chronicled life since the last time we saw her onstage – and that’s only if you believe the gossip – but there were no signs of it Friday at Mandalay Bay. The 20-year-old headliner was the same pop princess she was at 19. Nearly every part of Spears’ 90-minute show… Read more »

Nickelback Invade Michigan Campus, Have A Good Ol' Time – Review

Judging by the number of cars bearing Canada license plates around Michigan State University’s Breslin Center on Tuesday, it was clear that Vancouver’s Nickelback were going to feel right at home. Fans waved maple-leaf flags around the venue before the Campus Invasion show, which also featured performances by Starsailor, Injected and Nickelback protégées Default. Others sat atop their rides shouting pro-Canada slogans. Stepping onstage to sweeping, cinematic music, Nickelback kicked off their set with “Woke Up This Morning.” Singer/guitarist Chad Kroeger was obviously pleased with Nickelback’s newfound multiplatinum status – he grinned incessantly as fans punched their fists in the… Read more »

Imagine one of the biggest hip-hop outings in history taking shape this summer. It would be dubbed the Triple Threat Tour and feature multiplatinum acts Ja Rule, Jay-Z and P. Diddy. To top it off, each would bring with him his musical family. Representing with Ja Rule would be Ashanti and the rest of Murder Inc. Jay would “Roc the Mic” with his boys Beanie Sigel, Cam’ron and Memphis Bleek. And Diddy and his Bad Boy crew would do their thing. Keep imagining; although it was almost a reality, the tour has been called off. Last week, while promoting her… Read more »
