Prince Partying Like It's 2004

Prince is taking that little red Corvette out of the garage again. On the heels of his blistering Grammy “Purple Rain” performance, the ’80s funk legend has announced he will hit the road with the New Power Generation for his first major arena tour in six years in support of his new CD, Musicology. To help hype the tour, Prince says the upcoming gigs may be the last time fans get to see him jam out some of the best-known hits live. That presumably means that tunes like “Little Red Corvette,” “1999” “Purple Rain,” When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go… Read more »

Bad Religion 'Strikes' Again

Veteran Los Angeles punk outfit Bad Religion will release a new studio album, “The Empire Strikes First” June 8 via Epitaph. Like its predecessor, 2002’s “The Process of Belief,” the forthcoming disc was co-written and co-produced by guitarist Brett Gurewitz and frontman Greg Graffin. “It’s not ready for public consumption yet, but it’s basically recorded and finished,” Graffin told Billboard.com. “We really put a lot of pressure on ourselves to make the best album we could. ‘The Process of Belief’ is considered by many to be our comeback, since Brett and I started writing together again. After so many years… Read more »

Smile Empty Soul's 'Kids' Gives Them Something To Smile About

A year ago, Smile Empty Soul really were nowhere kids. With no album or single out yet, they were riding around in a dilapidated van that was crowded and playing in dilapidated clubs that weren’t. Now the bandmembers ride in a comfortable bus, get recognized even before they take the stage, and their single “Nowhere Kids” is blowing up at radio. Not only do Smile Empty Soul now have the luxury to travel in style, they can afford creature comforts and absurd indulgences. “We have a ridiculous amount of totally illegal fireworks on our bus,” bassist Ryan Martin admitted. “It’s… Read more »

Ben Kweller Goes New "Way"

Ben Kweller and producer Ethan Johns took a trip back in time in recording Kweller’s third solo release, On My Way. Johns encouraged the twentysomething pop phenom to cut his latest album in classic garage rock manner: guitars, bass and drums played live in the studio with no headphones and minimal post-production. Johns’ recording of the eleven-song set, due April 6th, captures some live-wire vocals from Kweller as well as his inspired guitar interplay with Mike Stroud (formerly of Dashboard Confessional), which echoes that of Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Danny Whitten circa 1969. Kweller was introduced to the producer… Read more »

Puddle Of Mudd: "CNN Bullsh*ts You"

The past year has been an array of ups and downs for Puddle Of Mudd. According to frontman Wes Scantlin, the very release of their second major label album, Life On Display, was, at times, in jeopardy. “When I thought the record was done, some idiot came back in and said that he wanted to re-edit the shit. We had been in the studio for a year! The best thing that happened was someone saying, ‘Hey, your record is done. We’re happy with it now!’ Well, I was happy with it two months ago, asshole!” Their sophomore album’s first single… Read more »

A Rockin' New Year

The big question as we enter 2004 is simply “Do you want some?” The answer will come when Liam Gallagher and elder brother Noel return to the fray with the new Oasis album later this year. Although to some the Mancunian brothers’ group may be too tied up with the hangover of ’90s Britpop to ever be a potent force again, they are still undoubtedly one of the biggest rock groups in the country. They do like to tread water, however, and a much-needed change in direction may finally come with the introduction of Death In Vegas man Richard Fearless… Read more »

Brands to Use 'Free' Music to Lure Teens

The great digital music giveaway is about to begin. In the new year, some of the world’s biggest brands will promote their products and services by doling out millions of free downloads through alliances with digital music services. “You’re going to see lots of free music given out via third-party companies,” buymusic.com founder Scott Blum says. “It’s not going to be Apple and iTunes driving the business. It’s going to be companies like Pepsi and other third parties that are promoting digital music on bottle caps and on labels.” Indeed, Apple Computer has inked a deal with Pepsi to give… Read more »

Britney Tells BBC She's a Role Model

Britney Spears insists she is role model for young girls despite recent revealing magazine covers and her new album with sexually explicit lyrics, the British Broadcasting Corp. said Sunday. In a radio interview to be broadcast Monday, the 21-year-old pop star said parents should not be worried if their children want to copy her. “I probably have more older fans than the younger ones, but I think the reason why everyone talks about the younger fans so much is because the parents are concerned,” Spears was quoted as saying. “And in the end they shouldn’t be concerned because they should… Read more »

Good Charlotte Shoot Heavy Clip For Anti-Suicide Song 'Hold On'

These days Good Charlotte are on top of the world, but there was a time when Benji Madden felt like taking his own life. “I’ll be the first person to say I have the most amazing life of anyone I’ve ever met, but I did come to certain points of my life where I thought that [suicide] was an option,” Benji admitted recently, sitting next to his brother Joel inside the Sunset Marquis Hotel. His voice trailing off, he quietly acknowledged the role that music played in ultimately steering him away from such a tragic and horrible act. The Madden… Read more »
