Van Halen Reunion Tour Offers Old, New, 'Wacky'

The Van Halen reunion is looking to be one of the biggest tours of the summer. It marks the first time in almost a decade that Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar have graced the same stage. “It just felt right,” drummer Alex Van Halen says. “Sammy and I got together, and it was like we hadn’t missed a beat. The moment we hit the studio and started making music, that was it. Making music is what is the center of this band – that and the friendship.” The tour, which kicks off Friday in… Read more »

Blink-182 May Play 'The Rock Show,' But No Doubt Deliver One – Review

Despite their hackneyed interchangeability, there’s a difference between a rock concert and rock show. Anyone thinking of challenging this should check out a stop on Blink-182 and No Doubt’s monthlong co-headlining trek. Even though they recorded a song called “The Rock Show,” Blink’s set Thursday night at the PNC Bank Arts Center definitely fell on the concert side of the spectrum. Bassist Mark Hoppus and guitarist Tom DeLonge stood dwarfed by the vast, mostly barren stage, save for five trapezoidal video screens positioned behind them. Were it not for a shirtless, mohawked Travis Barker peering down from a massive drum… Read more »

Madonna's Maverick Cries Foul Over Alleged Losses

The attorney for Maverick Records has dismissed as “hogwash” a claim by Warner Music Group (WMG) that Madonna’s label has lost $66 million since 1999. WMG’s claim is the latest wrinkle in a spat with Maverick’s principals – Madonna and Guy Oseary – over the value of the label and who will control it after this year. WMG has an option to buy the 60% of Maverick it does not currently own when the labels’ joint-venture agreement expires Dec. 31. Maverick attorney Bert Fields says WMG is “stabbing Madonna in the back” by filing the claim in the middle of… Read more »

The Get Up Kids Meet Macaulay, Strokes, Call Americans "Gun-Toting Freaks"

What do emo-rockers and child actors have in common? It turns out that The Get Up Kids and Macaulay Culkin share the same taste in drinking establishments. The Kansas City quintet recently encountered Mr. Home Alone in a New York City bar and had the following to say about it. “It was hilarious,” says bassist Rob Pope. “It was us in this downstairs bar [with] The Strokes and Macaulay Culkin and some people from Saturday Night Live. We were just really drunk and we were like, ‘What’s going on here? Where are we?’ So we sat down and talked to… Read more »

Tony Hawk Gets 'on Board' to Promote Teen Reading

Teens may be giving Tony Hawk’s new video game rave reviews, but a review of their favorite book could land them face time with the man himself. Teens between the ages of 12-18 have until the end of April to submit an entry in the national “Get on Board and Read @ your library” program, sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and Dean Foods, marketer and distributor of HERSHEY(R)’S Milks and MilkShakes. The grand prize is a trip to meet Hawk at a stop on his 2004 Boom Boom Huck Jam Tour, an arena show featuring top action sports… Read more »

Prince Partying Like It's 2004

Prince is taking that little red Corvette out of the garage again. On the heels of his blistering Grammy “Purple Rain” performance, the ’80s funk legend has announced he will hit the road with the New Power Generation for his first major arena tour in six years in support of his new CD, Musicology. To help hype the tour, Prince says the upcoming gigs may be the last time fans get to see him jam out some of the best-known hits live. That presumably means that tunes like “Little Red Corvette,” “1999” “Purple Rain,” When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go… Read more »

Bad Religion 'Strikes' Again

Veteran Los Angeles punk outfit Bad Religion will release a new studio album, “The Empire Strikes First” June 8 via Epitaph. Like its predecessor, 2002’s “The Process of Belief,” the forthcoming disc was co-written and co-produced by guitarist Brett Gurewitz and frontman Greg Graffin. “It’s not ready for public consumption yet, but it’s basically recorded and finished,” Graffin told Billboard.com. “We really put a lot of pressure on ourselves to make the best album we could. ‘The Process of Belief’ is considered by many to be our comeback, since Brett and I started writing together again. After so many years… Read more »

Smile Empty Soul's 'Kids' Gives Them Something To Smile About

A year ago, Smile Empty Soul really were nowhere kids. With no album or single out yet, they were riding around in a dilapidated van that was crowded and playing in dilapidated clubs that weren’t. Now the bandmembers ride in a comfortable bus, get recognized even before they take the stage, and their single “Nowhere Kids” is blowing up at radio. Not only do Smile Empty Soul now have the luxury to travel in style, they can afford creature comforts and absurd indulgences. “We have a ridiculous amount of totally illegal fireworks on our bus,” bassist Ryan Martin admitted. “It’s… Read more »

Ben Kweller Goes New "Way"

Ben Kweller and producer Ethan Johns took a trip back in time in recording Kweller’s third solo release, On My Way. Johns encouraged the twentysomething pop phenom to cut his latest album in classic garage rock manner: guitars, bass and drums played live in the studio with no headphones and minimal post-production. Johns’ recording of the eleven-song set, due April 6th, captures some live-wire vocals from Kweller as well as his inspired guitar interplay with Mike Stroud (formerly of Dashboard Confessional), which echoes that of Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Danny Whitten circa 1969. Kweller was introduced to the producer… Read more »

Puddle Of Mudd: "CNN Bullsh*ts You"

The past year has been an array of ups and downs for Puddle Of Mudd. According to frontman Wes Scantlin, the very release of their second major label album, Life On Display, was, at times, in jeopardy. “When I thought the record was done, some idiot came back in and said that he wanted to re-edit the shit. We had been in the studio for a year! The best thing that happened was someone saying, ‘Hey, your record is done. We’re happy with it now!’ Well, I was happy with it two months ago, asshole!” Their sophomore album’s first single… Read more »
