Apple plans to sell songs through new web service

Whether or not Steve Jobs is interested in owning a record label, he clearly wants to be in the music business. For months, the man best-known in the recording industry for the slogan “Rip, Mix, Burn” has been seeking a new identity: the saviour whose online-music service could represent the future for an industry struggling with the devastating effects of new technology. The pitch has worked: Mr Jobs’s Apple Computer Inc will be launching its own music service in coming weeks, with songs from all five major record labels. The new music service will be integrated with Apple’s iTunes music… Read more »

Music, Tech Groups OK Copyright Plans

The leading trade associations for the music and technology industries, which have been at loggerheads over consumers downloading songs on the Internet, have negotiated a compromise they contend will protect copyrights on movies and music without new government involvement. Lobbyists for some of the nation’s largest technology companies will argue under the new agreement against efforts in Congress to amend U.S. laws to broaden the rights of consumers, such as explicitly permitting viewers to make backup copies of DVDs for personal use or copy songs onto handheld listening devices. “How companies satisfy consumer expectations is a business decision that should… Read more »

Acknowledging that online piracy is forcing dramatic changes in the music industry, the world’stwo largest record companies are poised to make it easy and cheap for fans to buy-rather than steal-songs off the Internet. The moves by Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment accelerate the industry’s transition to an era in which music is distributed electronically. Other major labels are likely to follow as the record business grapples with the rise of online music copying through unauthorized services such as Napster, Kazaa and Morpheus and potentially billions of dollars in lost sales. Apple chief blasts labels

Steve Jobs is pleased to have been awarded a Grammy by the recording industry last Wednesday night, for technical achievements in music for Apple Computer. Jobs complained that the digital music services backed by the labels don’t make it easy for consumers to burn tracks from CDs they buy. “No one is going to use such services,” Jobs says. “If you legally acquire music, you need to have the right to manage it on all other devices that you own.” The lesson of Napster, which popularised unauthorised… Read more »
