Rocker David Cook wins "American Idol"


Rocker David Cook won the coveted title of “American Idol” on Wednesday, dealing an unexpected but decisive defeat to a silken-voiced teenager, also named David, on the most popular U.S. television show. Cook, 25, who was tending bar and playing in a band before he auditioned for the singing competition, stood back to applaud rival David Archuleta, 17, and then bent over crying after host Ryan Seacrest said he had won by 12 million votes. “This is amazing. iTunes to carry `American Idol' songs


“American Idol” fans will be able to download their favorite performances thanks to a new agreement between the Fox talent show and Apple Inc. Performances by “Idol” semifinalists go on sale on iTunes this week for 99 cents per song, the show’s producers and Cupertino-based Apple announced Monday. Full video of the top 12 contestants will be available through the online music store starting March 11 for $1.99. The songs and videos will be posted to iTunes the day after the show airs.

The integrity of “American Idol” as a contest for raw, undiscovered talent was called into question again after an Irish singer who once had a major-label deal, and solo album that flopped, advanced to the top rung of the competition this week. Green Day to hit the studio for "American Idiot" follow-up


Green Day are to enter the studio in January to work on the follow up to 2004’s huge-selling American Idiot. Earlier this year, the band said they had 45 songs for their new album. The band’s manager said that although they would be hitting the studio, no release date was forthcoming. The manager said that they would be updating Greenday.com at that time too. On the site the band announced they would be stepping away from all American Idiot themes, and that the new site wasn’t going to be themed around the new album, reports Music News website.

Weiland: Denied by Japan; Arrested in America


Japan’s probably feeling a little psychic right about now. The week after Velvet Revolver announced the Japanese leg of its tour was off because the Asian nation had “tak[en] exception with the backgrounds of various band members,” lead singer Scott Weiland was busted for DUI. The Nov. 21 arrest, the latest for the oft-arrested, oft-rehabbed rocker, was uncovered Monday by TMZ.com. Weiland, 40, is due in a Los Angeles court Dec. 13 to answer to the misdemeanor charge. Kimmel to host American Music Awards


Jimmy Kimmel will return for his fourth turn as host of the American Music Awards. “My intent is to break Glen Campbell’s all-time record of five. And his hip,” Kimmel, 39, said in a statement released Wednesday by Dick Clark Productions. The 35th annual American Music Awards will be held at the new Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE. The show, which honors popular music based on record sales and radio play, will be broadcast live Nov. 18 on ABC, which also airs Kimmel’s late-night talk show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
