Five For Fighting Returns To N.Y. On Anniversary Of Attacks

Five For Fighting, whose popularity surged after the post-September 11 embrace of the group’s single, “Superman (It’s Not Easy),” returned to New York Monday (March 11) as the city and the country marked the six-month anniversary of the terror attacks. The group was scheduled to perform Tuesday (March 12) at the city’s Irving Plaza. Frontman John Ondrasik said the timing makes perfect sense. “You know, in New York the song kinda has a different meaning than kinda around the rest of the world. You know, considering the Concert For New York and all of my conversations with firemen and what… Read more »

Sugarcult Show Cut Short When Floor Starts To Collapse

Southern California punk rockers Sugarcult gave new meaning to the saying “bring down the house” in Detroit on Wednesday when their performance at St. Andrew’s Hall was cut short because the floor was caving in. Just after performing their third song and latest single, “Bouncing Off the Walls,” Sugarcult were ordered to halt their set when a manager in the room below the club noticed the ceiling caving in as concertgoers, well, bounced off the walls. St. Andrew’s Hall, a historic building that has hosted the likes of Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails, was evacuated and the concert was canceled.… Read more »

On Verge Of Blowing Up, 50 Cent Finds Value In His Street Cred

There is no such thing as gut-check time for Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. He has to be a trooper at all times. Along with the normal artist concerns like squabbles with his label (his 1999 debut, Power of the Dollar, was heavily bootlegged and Trackmasters/Columbia never released it), producers and other rappers (he and Ja Rule have fought on and off wax), 50’s been stabbed, shot in the mouth and had to move away from his hometown to ensure his safety. But the Queens, New York, native says things could not be better. “I’m not bitter at all,” the 25-year-old… Read more »

UK's Sex Pistols to Reissue 'God Save the Queen'

British punk legends the Sex Pistols are to reissue their anarchic song “God Save the Queen” to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 50 years on the throne, their record company said Thursday. “(The record) is to be reissued around the Golden Jubilee celebrations on May 27,” Virgin Records said in a statement. “It will feature the original artwork.” The single’s anti-royal lyrics and cover image of the queen with a safety pin through her nose caused outrage on its first release in 1977. The song includes the verse: “God save the Queen/She ain’t no human being/There is no future/In England’s dreaming.” While… Read more »

Hoobastank Glad-Hand, 311 Toast And Rooster Strut At Emerald City – Review

Hoobastank opened their spring tour with 311 Monday with all the stage presence and salesmanship of a band bursting to ditch its warm-up act status. During their 45-minute set at the Paramount Theatre, singer Douglas Robb glad-handed the crowd at the front of the stage, hyped an upcoming show on a bill with Incubus and reminded the audience of his band’s name not once, not twice, but four times. (As if you forget a handle like Hoobastank.) “That was lovely,” Robb declared after several songs. It was a surprisingly Martha Stewart-ish term for a band pounding out kick-to-the-head mosh music.… Read more »

Jason Schwartzman Fell into Drumming

Phantom Planet is starting to make some headway on the charts, but its drummer is already making his own name. Actor Jason Schwartzman, who stars in the movies “Rushmore” and “Slackers,” is the band’s drummer. Schwartzman said he got into drumming because he and his friends decided to form a band. “I remember talking to a bunch of friends like when we were in third grade and said we should form a band. And one goes ‘Yeah, I’ll play guitar.’ And another goes ‘I’ll play bass.’ And I was like, OK, you guys got the first two cool instruments,” he… Read more »

Bono Smooched By Clinton, Cruise, Carmen Electra At 'Love Rocks' Love Fest

For what was supposed to be a valentine to Bono (“Bahn-o”), there sure were a lot of references to Bono (“Bone-o”) Thursday night. First, on the red carpet leading into the new Kodak Theatre, Evan and Jaron joked that they thought the inaugural “Love Rocks” concert was honoring the late Sonny Bono. Then, R.E.M. carried on the joke by bringing out Cher during their four-song set to duet with singer Michael Stipe on “I Got You Babe,” after which Cher said, “I’ve never done that song without my Bono, so that was for you, Bono.” Finally, when accepting his Heart… Read more »

Rock Star Hopefuls Jam Limp Bizkit Auditions

After hearing thousands of unknown hopefuls in a series of minute-long auditions, hard rock band Limp Bizkit may ask a few potential bandmates back to see if any strike the right chord, the group’s manager said on Tuesday. The band, fronted by Fred Durst and best known for its raging blend of punk, heavy metal and hip-hop, may sign a new guitarist through the open-call “Put Your Money Where Your Guitar Is” tryouts, which began in January. But the group has never guaranteed it would fill the spot left vacant when Wes Borland quit last fall. Of the nearly 5,000… Read more »

Limp Bizkit Manager Says Incubus Event Caused 'Good Guys' To Be Bad Guys

Limp Bizkit manager Peter Katsis revealed the band earnestly tried to reschedule a Northern California date for the Put Your Guitar Where Your Mouth Is audition. It was first slated to take place in early January, but when word of the search at Concord, California Guitar Center reached the owner and the other tenants of the strip mall, they weren’t too pleased. Katsis revealed an Incubus in-store gone awry two months ago rained on Limp’s parade. “Incubus had done an in-store at the Tower Records inside the same strip-mall,” he said. “There was considerable damage to several of the surrounding… Read more »
