Bowing to a threatened recording industry lawsuit, a Princeton University computer scientist decided against revealing Thursday how he and other researchers thwarted security measures meant to protect copyright digital music. Edward Felten, an associate professor whose team included Rice University and Xerox-PARC researchers, had been silent for days on whether he would present his findings at the International Information Hiding Workshop in Pittsburgh. Spanish-language broadcaster Univision Communications has created a music recording and publishing division, which will be headed by Jose Behar – the Latin music veteran who discovered Tejano singing sensation Selena. The new subsidiary, Univision Music Group, is headquartered in Los Angeles. As part of its music assets, Univision is acquiring a 50% interest in Disa Records, a privately held indie label based in Monterrey, Mexico, whose roster includes Los Angeles Azules. Twelve-time Brit Award winner and international chart topper Robbie Williams disclosed plans to release a version of “We Are the Champions,” recorded with the remaining members of Queen. Poor Freddie Mercury is pirouetting in his grave. Williams also told a British chat show he’s been wrestling with alcoholism off-and-on for the past four years. Straight from mainstream radio into your CD player, the sixth installment of Sony/Epic’s compilation series “Now That’s What I Call Music!” blasted its way to the top of the album charts this week, knocking late rapper Tupac Shakur back into the hereafter. “Now 6,” as it’s commonly called, sold more than 525,000 copies for the week ended Sunday, according to rankings data from SoundScan. Eminem avoided jail time when a judge sentenced him on Tuesday to two years’ probation for carrying a concealed weapon. But the rapper must refrain from excessive alcohol or drug use for those two years, undergo counseling, avoid “assaultive behavior” and can’t own or possess firearms or other weapons. Macomb County Circuit Judge Antonio P. Viviano also told Eminem he must get the court’s permission if he wants to leave the continental United States during that period. Tupac Shakur’s latest posthumous effort, Until the End of Time, has knocked Shaggy’s Hotshot out of the No. 1 spot on The Billboard 200 on its way to selling just over 425,000 copies in its first week. Superstar R&B chanteuse Mariah Carey has signed on at Virgin Records, leaving her longtime home of Columbia Records. Carey is slated to release her first record on the EMI imprint the soundtrack for “All that Glitters,” her upcoming 20th Century Fox film in late summer. Columbia Records confirmed Monday that the multiplatinum-selling artist, who has been with Columbia for more than a decade, had left the flagship imprint of Sony Music.
