Ben Folds Now One

A mere six months after the dissolution of the Ben Folds Five, singer/songwriter/pianist Ben Folds has finished a new album, Rockin’ the Suburbs, which will arrive at your neighborhood CD outlet on September 11th. The album is in truth Folds’ second solo effort, but while 1998’s Fear of Pop was a largely experimental tinkerfest, featuring William Shatner among other guests,… Suburbs follows somewhat closer to the BFF trademarks: hooky piano pop, scrapbook nostalgia and character sketches. Recorded with producer Ben Grosse ( Fuel, Filter, the B-52’s) at Krell Studios in his adopted home nation of Australia, Folds played all the… Read more »

Vivendi, MP3.Com Need Each Other For Success

The lesson learned in the courtship between Vivendi Universal and MP3.com is that record companies and technology companies need each other to succeed in the whipsaw world of Internet music. The world’s five largest record labels are racing to launch alternatives to Napster, the once popular song-swapping service now barred by a federal court from offering most songs copyrighted by the labels. And Vivendi, which owns the world’s largest record company Universal Music Group, is betting that MP3.com will raise its online presence and offerings above its competitors. Vivendi plans to launch a music subscription service called Duet this summer… Read more »

R&B superstar group Destiny’s Child did more than just survive in the album rankings this week – it rode an unprecedented wave of buzz and anticipation straight to No. 1, knocking fellow diva Janet Jackson down to second place. The Columbia Records trio’s third album “Survivor” shifted more than 663,000 records in its opening week, according to SoundScan data issued on Wednesday. Rufus Wainwright: 'I'M Totally Selling Out'

Rufus Wainwright’s goals for his sophomore album, Poses – due in stores June 5 – are not modest. “This time, I basically had the idea in my mind that I’m going to write a huge pop album that’s going to sell millions of copies and going to be all hit songs,” declares the 27-year-old son of singer-songwriters Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle. “I’m totally selling out.” Actually, he’s kidding only a little bit. “My main objective was to sort of scale it down a little and make it more accessible,” explains Wainwright, whose 1998 debut won critical raves, including… Read more »

Censors Pore Over Janet Jackson Album

Pop diva Janet Jackson’s latest album may have rocketed up the U.S. charts but fans in Singapore will have to wait as the state censor weighs whether to uphold its ban over her racy lyrics. Local distributor EMI Singapore voluntarily submitted “All for You” for vetting but launched an appeal after authorities decided the album could not be sold because of “explicit sexual lyrics” in the song “Would You Mind.” “The appeal is still in process,” a spokeswoman for the Films and Publications Department told Reuters. “We haven’t come to a conclusion yet.” EMI was not immediately available for comment.… Read more »

Stones' Svengali Recounts Street Fighting Days

Long before gun-toting rap stars roamed America, the first manager of the Rolling Stones was terrorizing “Swinging” London, throwing errant journalists out of windows and others off bridges. Accompanied by a thuggish bodyguard, teenage pop Svengali Andrew Loog Oldham was said to be quite the rogue 40 years ago: Sporting a cape, he would careen around the city in his Mini Cooper, speakers blaring from the roof of the tiny car. This is not all completely true – especially the bit about the cape – but the anecdotes and rumors metamorphosed into “facts” over the years, a consequence of the… Read more »
