U2 Fired Up for Unforgettable Night at Grammys

Will U2 find what it’s looking for on Wednesday, when it competes for eight Grammy Awards at the music industry’s biggest bash of the year? Or will the Irish rock quartet be rattled by folk musicians, soulful R&B divas and tireless troubadour Bob Dylan? Nothing is ever certain about the Grammys, whose industry voters frequently stun music fans with oddball choices, including last year’s album of the year prize to semi-retired jazz-rock recluses Steely Dan. In the past few years the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, which organizes the event, has tried to improve the awards’ image by… Read more »

Grammy Shows No Favorite for a Sweep

With a leading eight Grammy nominations and a history of Grammy awards, U2 might seem to be in position to sweep the awards on Wednesday. This is one of those years, however, in which no group is considered a clear favorite, neither the Irish rockers nor other multiple nominees like India.Arie or Alicia Keys. “There’s not an obviously clear-cut winner,” said Rick Krim, executive vice president of talent and programming at VH1. “I’m kind of hoping it gets spread around, because there are so many deserving nominees this year.” Some recent ceremonies have been coronations for the year’s most successful… Read more »

Russians: Nyet So Fast, Lance

For those still scratching their heads over Lance Bass’ plans to become the youngest space traveler ever, you’re not alone. A spokesman for Russia’s space agency, Rosaviakosmos, said Thursday that they haven’t started any talks with Netherlands-based MirCorp about sending the ‘N Syncer into space. And while it’s entirely possible Bass could still realize his $25 million Rocket Man dream, the pop star’s announcement “is as if I said I had bought Australia,” Rosaviakosmos spokesman Sergei Gorbunov tells Reuters. “MirCorp has no right to sell these flights. They have no link to Rosaviakosmos, we have no contract linking us.” They… Read more »

Woman Awarded Damages in Brown Case

Jurors who ruled that a woman was wrongly fired from soul singer James Brown’s company awarded her $40,000 in damages Wednesday – about a year’s salary in the job. The jury earlier rejected the woman’s claim of sexual harassment by Brown. Its award was for compensatory damages; no punitive damages were given. “We’re extremely happy,” Brown’s attorney, Debra Opri, said after the award was announced. The 68-year-old “godfather of soul” was not in court. Lisa Ross Agbalaya, who was West Coast president of James Brown Enterprises, had sued Brown for $1 million, claiming sexual harassment, retaliation, wrongful firing and infliction… Read more »

Singer Brown Cleared in $1M Lawsuit

Soul singer James Brown won a partial victory in court, with a jury finding he did not sexually harass an employee, but ruling that his company wrongfully fired the woman. “He feels good. He wants you all to know he’s feeling really good today, really good,” Brown’s attorney, Debra Opri, said after delivering Tuesday’s verdict by phone to the 68-year-old “godfather of soul.” Lisa Ross Agbalaya had sued Brown for $1 million, claiming sexual harassment, retaliation, wrongful firing and infliction of emotional distress. Jurors were scheduled to begin deliberations Wednesday on how much to award Agbalaya in damages following the… Read more »

When they finish the Projekt Revolution Tour, which also features Linkin Park, Cypress Hill and DJ Z-Trip, Adema will join Alien Ant Farm, Fenix TX, Glassjaw and others on the already-in-progress SnoCore Festival, which runs until March 30. After that, the band will likely tour on its own through the end of the year. Godsmack's Erna Wins Big On Patriots Super Bowl Triumph

Boston-area band Godsmack is celebrating the Super Bowl victory of hometown football team the New England Patriots, who beat the St. Louis Rams on Sunday (February 3). Singer Sully Erna revealed that he won $1,750 on the Patriots. “A friend of mine called in the bet and I think it went through (Las) Vegas, but it was… I’m kind of bummed, I guess. Last week they were paying 950-if you bet the game straight up, no points, they were paying 950 for every hundred, and then it went down to five for every hundred. And then I called in thinking… Read more »

Wes Borland: Why He Left Limp Bizkit

The more time Wes Borland spent in Limp Bizkit, the more things around him turned black. First his wardrobe – draping cloaks that brought to mind one of his favorite characters, Darth Vader. Then his eyes – gripping contacts that, next to his flaring nostrils, made him look like a guitar-toting monster. His heart was the next to go. “Bells start going off, like, ‘This is what it feels like to sell out,’” Borland recalled. “I’m enjoying all the perks of [Limp Bizkit], but I feel my heart is going black, because this is not what I’m called to do.… Read more »

Teenage Fanclub, Howdy! – Review

They were destined to be the next big thing before Nirvana arrived in ’91. They literally launched the career of Oasis (former label mates who called them “the best band in the world”). Those two strikes aside, Teenage Fanclub’s indie-cred, sugar-sweet melodies and twinkling guitars have forged them a fine career. But as a textbook “cult band” (under-the radar commercial success bemoaned by drooling, faithful fanbase) over six albums, the Fanclub have literally painted themselves into a power-pop corner – you know, the neighborhood where the three-chord songs about girls live. Howdy! is the beginning of the journey out of… Read more »
