America’s country music scene isn’t exactly known for its gay artists, but a colorful pack of wanna-be stars pulled out their best rustic twangs and wailing guitars on Thursday to try to change all that. Linkin Park will be headlining the upcoming Livid Festival in Australia. The band will be joining the bill that already includes the White Stripes, Jurassic 5, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the Roots and Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Living End. The Livid Festival will make three stops-October 11 in Sydney, October 12 in Melbourne and October 18 in Brisbane. Thrash metal bands from the early ’80s and beyond are the subject of a new documentary called Get Thrashed, which should be released before the end of the year. According to Rollingstone.com, Metallica, Godsmack, Disturbed, Anthrax, Slipknot, Kittie, Meshuggah are among the bands profiled by director Rick Ernst for the film which explores the early thrash metal scene and its subsequent impact. The decision by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to seek out individuals who illegally trade music on peer-to-peer networks sparked a congressional inquiry Thursday. Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., asked the recording industry trade group to turn over copies of the subpoenas it issued to Internet providers under the controversial Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Coleman said he feared that the RIAA was being too heavy-handed in its pursuit of Internet music pirates. Two-thirds of Internet users who download music don’t care whether they’re violating copyright laws, according to a new survey that highlights the uphill enforcement battle facing the recording industry. The survey published Thursday by the nonprofit Pew Internet and American Life Project estimated that roughly 35 million American adults use file-sharing software, about 29 percent of Internet users. Those figures were generally consistent with other estimates of 60 million American users across all age groups. Jamaican rapper Sean Paul has been charged with using profanity during a performance at Montego Bay’s Reggae Sumfest last week. Paul’s performance Thursday night was laced with expletives, police commander Newton Amos said Monday. Authorities served him with a summons under a law prohibiting people from using profanity in public. He’s scheduled to appear in court Wednesday in Montego Bay, police said. Parents, roommates – even grandparents – are being targeted in the music industry’s new campaign to track computer users who share songs over the Internet, bringing the threat of expensive lawsuits to more than college kids. “Within five minutes, if I can get hold of her, this will come to an end,” said Gordon Pate of Dana Point, California, when told by The Associated Press that a federal subpeona had been issued over his daughter’s music downloads. Japanese electronics and entertainment giant Sony Corp. reported a 98 percent decline in profit for the April-June quarter as sales faltered in key businesses such as electronics, video games, movies and music. Sony said Thursday it earned 1.1 billion yen ($9 million) in the first quarter of its fiscal year, down from 57.2 billion yen for the same period last year.
