Universal Discounts CDs to Mixed Reaction

Universal Music Group’s strategy of lowering its CD prices is good news for music fans, but some traditional music retailers on Thursday worried the move may damage their business. A day after Universal announced a cut on the wholesale price of most of its CDs and an end to advertising discounts, retailers large and small began assessing how the new pricing plan would affect them. Large retailers such as Borders, BestBuy, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Amazon.com generally reserved judgment Thursday on the change, although several noted it could be an effective consumer lure. Several of them declined to discuss how… Read more »

Court Blocks FCC Media Ownership Rules

A federal court Wednesday blocked controversial new Federal Communications Commission media ownership rules pending a full judicial review in a major blow to large media companies. In a loss for the Republican-led FCC, the three-judge panel of the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia granted a stay order that prevented the new rules from taking effect as scheduled on Thursday. Critics argued that the FCC rules would concentrate too much power in the hands of media moguls. The new rules were backed by media giants including Viacom Inc.’s CBS, General Electric Co.’s NBC and News Corp. Ltd’s Fox… Read more »

'N Sync Pays Overdue Tax Bill to Ohio

City tax officials say they’ve collected an overdue tax bill from ‘N Sync and the band’s management after several reminders and two lawsuits. The account was “paid in full” as of Thursday, city tax administrator Melinda Frank said Friday. She could not confirm the amount because the payment had not been entered into the city’s computer system by the close of business. Two lawsuits, each covering a separate aspect of the city income tax law, sought a total of $7,861 for back taxes, interest and penalties for income earned in the city in 2000 and 2001. The group paid slightly… Read more »

Missy Elliott Wins MTV Video of the Year

There were no big winners at the MTV Video Music Awards – Missy Elliott’s “Work It” won two awards, including video of the year, while Justin Timberlake, Coldplay and Beyonce had three apiece. The 71-year-old Johnny Cash, nominated seven times for “Hurt,” won once. As usual, the most memorable moments had nothing to do with the moonmen trophies. Twenty years after the first MTV Video Music Awards, not much has changed – Madonna still makes jaws drop and cheeks blush. Just like her first time, the superstar upstaged everyone at the 20th annual MTV Video Music Awards, only she had… Read more »

Fox, in a flesh-baring short gray dress. They were the subtle ones. Christina Aguilera’s dress was covered with pink feathers, while Mya wore short, tight black patent leather and lace. Singer Tweet had on black and white over-the-knee leather boots and a dress made… Read more »
