Late in the afternoon of Jan. 16, a SWAT team from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, backed up by officers from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and the local police department, along with a few drug-sniffing dogs, burst into a unmarked recording studio on a short, quiet street in an industrial neighborhood near the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Music company EMI Group PLC – home of The Rolling Stones and Coldplay – has been talking with online retailers about possibly selling its entire digital music catalog in MP3 format without copy protection, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing numerous people familiar with the matter. Anna Nicole Smith was pronounced dead Thursday (February 8) in a Florida hospital. She was 39. The former model and reality-TV star was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital after an operator at the Seminole Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida – where Smith was discovered unconscious – called 911 at 1:38 p.m. ET. According to Seminole County authorities, Smith’s personal nurse found her and called the hotel operator. Smith’s bodyguard administered CPR. Warner Music Group Corp., home to recording artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, James Blunt and Daniel Powter, said Thursday its first-quarter profit fell 74 percent due to fewer albums released during the period and soft domestic and European sales. Its shares fell nearly 5 percent. The New York-based recording company said net income declined to $18 million, or 12 cents per share, from $69 million, or 46 cents per share, during the same period a year ago. Sony Corp and Bertelsmann AG have refiled a request for EU regulators to clear a 2004 deal merging their music units, the European Commission said Thursday. Regulators have to re-examine the deal they cleared in July 2004 because an EU court struck down their original approval last July, citing “manifest errors” in how authorities decided that combining the two music majors would not restrict customer choice.
