Universal to sell songs without copy protection


Vivendi’s Universal Music Group, the world’s largest music label, on Thursday said it will test the sale of songs from artists such as Amy Winehouse, 50 Cent and the Black Eyed Peas, without customary copy-protection technology. The company said in a statement it will allow the sale of thousands of its albums and tracks available in MP3-form without copy-protection software, known as digital rights management, over a trial period. John Lennon and Paul McCartney returned to the U.S. country music charts for the first time in 12 years Thursday thanks to a cover of “Revolution” by Nashville trio Rascal Flatts. The tune debuted at No. 60 on the Hot Country Songs tally, almost 39 years after it was originally released as the flip side of the Beatles’ “Hey Jude” in August 1968. The Cure record postponed again


The Cure’s 14th studio record has been postponed for a second time and will not hit stores until next spring, the band’s record company said on Thursday. “The album got pushed to 2008, more like an April/May release. Robert is still recording,” a Geffen Records spokeswoman said from New York, referring to the band’s frontman Robert Smith. By Pearl Jam fans and Internet watchdogs were up in arms Thursday after it was revealed that AT&T Inc. censored portions of the rock band’s live concert cybercast on Sunday. Pavarotti admitted to hospital


Opera superstar Luciano Pavarotti, who was diagnosed with cancer last year, has been admitted to hospital in northern Italy and is in a satisfactory condition, a hospital spokesman said on Thursday. Pavarotti was hospitalized with a fever in his home town of Modena on Wednesday, the spokesman said. He is likely to be discharged in the next few days.
