Powell to engage youth in MTV 'global discussion'

Eight years ago, President Clinton made headlines on MTV, not with some sober policy initiative, but an infamous reply to a 24-year-old’s impertinent question about whether he preferred “boxers or briefs.” (Mostly briefs, came the answer.) Tonight, MTV offers a new political forum – for a more world-conscious post-Sept. 11 age – in what’s billed as a “global discussion” with Secretary of State Colin Powell. Experts say the session is a smart “brand-building” tool that helps the cable network solidify its status as an outlet for political expression – and not just music videos – among the nation’s youth. “Teens… Read more »

Custom's 'Hey, Mister' Makes Its Move, But Not On MTV

New York modern rock artist Custom continues to make a name for himself with his single, “Hey Mister,” an edgy, graphic rock tune detailing a sexual relationship as described by the man to the woman’s father. The song debuted on both the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts in late December and has climbed to Number 26 (Modern) and 28 (Mainstream) on the current listings. However, one outlet that has turned its nose up at the song is MTV. “We took a pass on the video due to lyrical content,” a spokesperson for the cable network said.… Read more »

U.S. wants its MTV to get message out in Arab world

The architects of the government’s post-Sept. 11 propaganda war may well want their MTV on the frontlines in the Arab world. Rushing to shift perceptions of the United States in the Islamic world, Washington and Hollywood are now brainstorming about how the entertainment business might help convey a wider – and more positive – range of perceptions about America. And no demo is more crucial to the future of Islamic-Western relations than the 15-30 age group. That’s where MTV comes in. The potential to intersperse messages between programming segments – as with the “Rock the Vote” campaign, for example –… Read more »

In one of the last weeks before the new season, all four major networks for the first time finished with the same share among young adults for the Sept. 3-9 period – another sign of how hotly contested the upcoming season could be. (However, Tuesday’s terrorist attacks mean the new season, scheduled to start next Monday, could be delayed.) NBC won for the 20th time in 21 weeks in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic (3.3 rating, nine share), according to Nielsen, but second-place CBS (3.1/9) and third-place ABC and Fox (who tied at 3.0/9) were all within three-tenths of the… Read more »
