The Beatles again proved their enduring popularity when an auction of several pieces of the Fab Four’s memorabilia, including a rare early concert poster and a program for a 1965 U.S. concert tour, fetched thousands of dollars. The Beatles’ mementos were among hundreds of items from artists such as the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Queen and Madonna at Christie’s biannual pop memorabilia auction. A new version of The Beatles’ album “Let It Be” will be released in November, the group’s company Apple Corps announced Thursday. “Let It Be…Naked” strips the 1969 album of Phil Spector’s lavish production effects, returning to Sir Paul McCartney’s original idea for the recording. “This is the noise we made in the studio,” McCartney said of the new version. “It’s exactly as it was in the room. The Beatles want to take another bite out of Apple Computer Inc. Their record company, Apple Corps Ltd., said Friday that it was suing Apple Computer because the technology company violated a 1991 agreement by entering the music business with its iTunes online store. When Steve Jobs co-founded Apple Computer in 1977, he is said to have chosen the name in part as a tribute to the Beatles. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Beatles’ first appearance on American TV, the Museum of Television & Radio in New York and Los Angeles will present an exclusive exhibit on the group, running Feb. 6 through April 30, 2004. “Revolution: The Beatles on Television,” will include Beatles music videos and TV appearances before and after the breakup of the band. Police raids in England and the Netherlands on Friday recovered what could be about 500 original Beatles tapes that were stolen in the 1970s, including some never-released tracks. British police said the tapes were “priceless,” and that the only such recordings that have been heard before were bootlegs. Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney reunited Friday night for an emotional musical tribute to the memory of George Harrison on the anniversary of the ex-Beatle’s death. With Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker and Harrison’s son Dhani, the surviving Beatles shared a night of musical memories with an audience of 5,000 devoted fans at the “Concert For George” at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Money raised by the concert is to benefit the Material World Charitable Foundation, which Harrison founded. The ex-Beatle, 58, who succumbed to cancer was the second from the group to die. The second annual Beatles tribute tour, dubbed A Walk Down Abbey Road – A Tribute To The Beatles, kicks off again next month. The incredible success of the inaugural tour last year prompted the show producer Paul Zukoski to put it back on the road this summer, and with a few new artists added to the lineup. Joan Jett has covered the Beatles song “The Word” as part of a charity drive to support breast cancer awareness. Jett’s recording is a bonus track on It’s All About Eve (Music For The Cure), a project organized by Fore Reel Entertainment and slated for release on June 13, with 100 percent of the proceeds slated to go to the T.J. Martell Foundation and the Libby Ross Foundation.
