John Mellencamp has lashed out at PresidentGeorge W. Bush and America’s foreign policy. In an open letter he co-wrote with his wife Elaine, Mellencamp blasts the powers that be for demonizing as “anti-American and unpatriotic” anyone who questions the policies of the U.S. government and the war in Iraq. Mellencamp uses words and phrases like “systematically lied to,” “the political ‘hijacking’ of Iraq,” “this misadventure,” and “the globe’s leading bully. Arrogant and thoughtless” to describe the current situation, before writing, “Now, each day, as the dust settles and the truth slowly surfaces, more and more people come to the inevitable… Read more »

Blink-182 To Play Shows For A Buck

Who says a dollar doesn’t get you anywhere these days? Come November, a buck will be enough to get you into a Blink-182 show when they embark on a rare club tour. “We’re paying for this [show] ourselves,” singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge said recently. “It’s a chance for us to just come back together because we always play gigantic stages. Mark, Travis and I are always like 30 feet away from each other so we get to come back closer and remember what it’s like. It’s so much fun to play in the smaller places.” The DollaBill Tour launches November 6… Read more »

Apple Unveils Music Store for Windows

It was a strange sight Thursday – Steve Jobs touting a Windows product. But the chief executive of Apple Computer Inc. had a perfectly sensible motive. In a move to reach the masses who use computers based on Microsoft Corp. software, Jobs unveiled a Windows-compatible Apple iTunes Music Store, an Internet song-downloading service that has proven successful among Macintosh users. But Mac users comprise only about 3 percent of the computer-buying public, and now Apple is entering a market crowded with rival music services for the Windows world. For its Windows launch, Apple managed to pull some exclusive deals that… Read more »

Courtney Love Arraignment Delayed

The arraignment of former Hole frontperson Courtney Love on drug charges has been postponed to October 31, from its original date this past Friday (October 10). Love’s attorneys asked a Los Angeles Superior Court judge on Friday if the arraignment could be delayed to give them time to review the charges, which the city prosecutor did not protest. Love herself was not present for the proceedings. The singer and actress was arrested on October 2 after she was observed breaking the windows of her alleged ex-boyfriend’s house and trying to enter. Police on the scene determined she was under the… Read more »

Barenaked Ladies Endure Misspelling, Hit the Road

Barenaked Ladies’ drummer Tyler Stewart jokingly tells Billboard.com that heads better roll at their label Reprise, which mistakenly printed early versions of the band’s new disc, “Everything to Everyone,” as “Everything for Everyone.” “Either they laid off the spell-check person or they are just so frickin’ negligent, that they deserve to go out of business anyway,” Stewart says with a laugh. The album is the band’s first studio release since 2000’s “Maroon.” The 14-track disc finds the band changing paces a bit and approaching songwriting from a totally different direction. “I think this album marks a new beginning because there… Read more »

On Tuesday (September 30), Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong’s own record label, Adeline Records, released an album by a band called the Network. Titled Money Money 2020, the album features a singer who sounds remarkably like Armstrong himself, leading to fan speculation that the band is actually Green Day in disguise. Although Green Day’s publicist did not confirm nor deny the rumors at press time, a management spokesperson flatly revealed, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”… Read more »

Something Corporate Head To 'Space' Via L.A., Plan Headlining Trek

The pressures on a frontman are fierce. Besides remembering the words and singing in key, you have to look cool. Keep the guitar slung low. Get close to the mic and sneer. Don’t be afraid to windmill. But what if you’re a singer without an axe to wield? Good luck trying to make like Pete Townshend with a piano, but somehow Andrew McMahon pulls it off. “I think it’s the whole idea of not trying to look cool,” he offered as an explanation of why he appears just the opposite when leading his band, Something Corporate. “I don’t think that… Read more »

Suicide Band Banned From Club

A week after announcing plans to host an on-stage suicide by a terminally ill euthanasia advocate, Florida industrial rockers Hell on Earth have lost their booking at a Ft. Lauderdale venue. David Hundley, owner of the State Theater in St. Petersburg, said on Wednesday that he would not host next Saturday’s show. Unclear whether the planned suicide was a publicity stunt or an “illusion,” Hundley said during a press conference that his concern for what effect the stunt might have on young fans forced his hand. “We deal with a lot of kids here and we don’t want their parents… Read more »

Fuel Guitarist Says New Album Is Best 'Selection' Of Songs Yet

When Fuel’s third CD, Natural Selection, comes out next Tuesday (September 23), it faces heavy competition that same day from new releases by Nickelback, Dave Matthews, and Limp Bizkit. But Fuel guitarist and songwriter Carl Bell revealed that he’s confident about the quality of the band’s work on this album. “I think we just really went to raise the bar on this one,” Bell said. “We sat back and said, ‘All right, we’re not gonna rush this one through, let’s take our time and do this one right.’ And I think it shows. The record is, I think, far and… Read more »

My Life As A Pop Chick

What everyone always wants to know is: who’s the worst? Meaning: which really famous person out there is a berk whose lack of personality is in inverse proportion to their abundance of fame? And the answer is, of course, all of them. No, it’s not. It’s Jon Bon Jovi. The next question – who’s the best, of course – is more difficult. The interviewees I like are the ones that turn out to be more than you expected, whether that’s more intelligent, or honest, or bonkers, or fun, whatever. And there are plenty of those. Madonna (sharper), Björk (wilder), James… Read more »
