Catch Him On Tour, But On Film Dave Matthews Wants To Be Missed

Dave Matthews has plenty of things to do and places to go – what with his band regrouping for a summer tour, re-signing to RCA Records and beginning pre-production on a new album – but during his break from the DMB, the frontman pretended to be someone with no goals and nowhere to go. In Matthews’ first film role, “Because of Winn-Dixie,” he plays a drifter. “How on earth could I be a drifter?” Matthews asked. “If I didn’t have the job I have right now, if I wasn’t playing music, who knows? I could have been a scientist, but… Read more »

Backstreet Boys Rekindling Fire In Studio After Three Years

The Backstreet Boys are in sync again. “It’s been like three years since we’ve all been in the studio together, so it’s like the fire was rekindled,” is how Nick Carter described the reunion during a recent break from recording. “We’re in there experimenting and really cool stuff’s coming out. It’s not gonna be the same Backstreet. I mean, you’re always gonna have Backstreet Boys, but the music’s gonna change.” The group plans to update the teen-pop sound it mastered in the late ’90s with a more mature approach to production and songwriting. “We’re just not doing it like we… Read more »

Charlotte Church Gaining $30M Trust Fund

Charlotte Church, the bright-eyed Welsh soprano who has sung for two U.S. presidents, the pope and Queen Elizabeth II, turned 18 on Saturday, meaning she now has control of her $30 million trust fund. Church – whose bursts of rebelliousness, family spats and a now-discarded boyfriend have become a tabloid soap opera – now faces the difficult transition from child prodigy to adult star. With more than 10 million records sold around the world, the singer’s financial future seems secure. But Church said she planned to leave most of the trust-fund money where it was, telling Britain’s GMTV television: “I… Read more »

Casino May Be Fined for Nelly's Treatment

A Missouri casino faces a possible $50,000 fine for allegedly giving the rapper Nelly special treatment. State regulators claim the President Casino on the Admiral let Nelly skirt rules intended to limit the amount of money patrons can bet. The Missouri Gaming Commission proposed the fine Thursday. The commission alleges the casino violated some 10 state laws and rules while accommodating Nelly, who in the documents is referred to only as the “Patron.” The casino hosted a late-night birthday party last November for Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Haynes Jr. Regulators allege he and his eight-person entourage entered the… Read more »

Justin Timberlake Signs On For First Big-Screen Acting Role

After nearly a year of reading scripts, Justin Timberlake has finally decided on his first feature-film role, and it’s not Jimmy Olsen. While rumors had the pop star taking on the role of the superhero’s pal in the upcoming “Superman” flick, that film still has no director or star, leaving Timberlake free to pursue another part. Timberlake has signed on for his big-screen acting debut in the crime drama “Edison,” in which he’ll play Joshua Pollack, “a fresh-out-of-college kid with a counterculture bent” who gets his start by interning at a big-city newspaper, writer/director David Burke said. The character is… Read more »

Glitz, Star Power Heats Up at Super Bowl

For the humdrum New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers, putting on a show to match the glitz, glitter and star power of the rest of Super Bowl Sunday was no easy task. Typical of America’s biggest unofficial holiday, the game was only the icing on an over-the-top extravaganza. There was a gleaming new $450 million stadium to show off, a slew of pricey new ads, and Beyonce, Janet Jackson and P. Diddy to share the field. The biggest cliffhanger of the week wasn’t who would win, but whether Janet’s brother, Michael, would show up. He didn’t, but Justin Timberlake did,… Read more »

Art Garfunkel to Fight Marijuana Charge

Folk-rock legend Art Garfunkel apparently is contesting a marijuana possession charge he faces in upstate New York. Settling the matter Wednesday could have been as easy as paying a $100 fine, but instead a judge set a Feb. 11 hearing after Garfunkel’s attorney Michael Federoff appeared in court. Federoff declined to discuss the case and a call to a publicist for Garfunkel was not immediately returned Wednesday night. Garfunkel, 62, of Manhattan, was charged with marijuana possession Jan. 17 after state police stopped his limousine for speeding in Hurley, 55 miles southwest of Albany. Police said a trooper smelled marijuana… Read more »
