The five major record label groups and the three largest music retailers have agreed to pay $143 million in cash and CDs to resolve a long-standing class action price-fixing case. The settlement, announced Monday, brings to a close allegations that the major labels and retailers had violated antitrust laws and illegally inflated the cost of CDs. At issue was a policy called “minimum advertised pricing,” or MAP, under which the major labels would jointly pay for advertising if a retailer agreed to sell CDs above a certain price. Britney Spears’ next single “Boys,” from her latest album Britney, will do double duty as one of the upcoming singles from the soundtrack to Austin Powers in Goldmember. The soundtrack version, however, will be an exclusive remix of the track by the ubiquitous production duo, the Neptunes, who worked on Britney as well. The “Boys” remix is tentatively set as the second single from the soundtrack. Beyonce Knowles’ “Work It Out” is expected to be the first single and will hit radio in early June. Pop singer Jewel broke her collarbone and a rib when she was thrown from a horse at her boyfriend’s ranch Wednesday. Jewel was staying with beau Ty Murray, a major figure in the professional rodeo circuit, at his ranch near Ft. Worth, Texas, enjoying a five-day reprieve from a promotional tour, according to an Atlantic Records spokesperson. She was taken to a medical center and was undergoing treatment for the fractures and bruising at press time. Canadian power trio Rush will kick off its first tour in five years June 28 in Hartford, Conn. The 27 confirmed stops are the first in the band’s planned extensive tour in support of its latest Atlantic album, “Vapor Trails,” due May 14. First single “One Little Victory” thundered to a No. 22 debut on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart last week. The tour is billed as “An Evening With Rush,” and will not feature an opening act. R.E.M.’s Peter Buck was cleared of all charges alleging he behaved badly on a trans-Atlantic flight last April. An Isleworth Crown Court in London found the guitarist not guilty Friday (April 5) of assault, being drunk on an aircraft and damaging airline dishes, plates and other meal-service items, according to a court spokesperson. Buck waited with wife Stephanie and bandmates Michael Stipe and Mike Mills for the jury to render its verdict, which came after a five-and-a-half-hour deliberation. Ernest Hemingway once described courage as “grace under pressure.” Rush drummer Neil Peart liked the phrase so much that he used it as the title of the band’s 1984 album. California pop/rock outfit Sugar Ray is hitting a host of small U.S. college campuses on its spring tour, which will kick off with a Feb. 15-17 stand at Caesars Tahoe casino in Lake Tahoe, Nev. The jaunt comes in support of the group’s self-titled Lava/Atlantic album, which debuted at No. 6 on The Billboard 200 in June 2001.
