Sun Records Founder Sam Phillips Dies

Sam Phillips, the man who discovered Elvis Presley and helped kickstart the rock and roll era, died of respiratory failure at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, on Wednesday (July 30). He was 80. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, Phillips founded the Sun Records label in Memphis in 1952 and recorded the debut single from Elvis Presley (“That’s All Right, Mama” b/w “Blue Moon of Kentucky”) in 1954. Elvis’ first recording helped secure both his and Phillips’ places in rock history and set the stage for Phillips’ work with some of the giants of… Read more »

Rock Photog Taps Subjects For Album Help

Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz, Jakob Dylan, Willie Nelson and T-Bone Burnett have leant a hand to the debut album from Rusty Truck, the brainchild of former Rolling Stone photographer Mark Seliger. Coda Terra Entertainment will release the 12-song effort on Sept. 24. Seliger met the artists while working for Rolling Stone, but Rusty Truck only began to take shape when a pair of Wallflowers encouraged Seliger’s musical endeavors. Band leader Dylan invited Seliger into the studio to cut a demo. Later, keyboardist Rami Jaffee asked Seliger to play a show with him in Los Angeles. Seliger agreed and later relocated… Read more »

Gob, Default, IME Teach Canadian Kids How To Rock

In the mid-‘60s a trippy Californian pop band belted out a song with the question, “So you want to be a rock ‘n’ roll star?” which was followed by the answer, “Just get an electric guitar and take some time, and learn how to play.” Now that some of Canada’s aspiring rock gods and goddesses have done exactly what that Byrds song suggested, a few of them are gearing up for an excitable new music documentary series on the CBC called Rock Camp. Rock Camp will follow 18 young musicians aged 14 to 18 for three weeks and will document… Read more »

Damone: Fast Times At Rock And Roll High – Review

Who can forget that scene in Fast Times At Ridgemont High where Phoebe Cates takes off her red bikini top to the tune of “Moving In Stereo” by The Cars, delighting pubescent boys all over the world, not to mention Judge Reinhold. It seems that the antics of Jeff Spicoli and co. rubbed off on some that weren’t even born when the movie came out. Take Massachusetts rockers Damone for instance, who have named their band after the concert ticket scalping weasel character in the flick, and take to the stage to the very Cars tune Judge Reinhold waxed the… Read more »

Target is offering an exclusive six-track CD featuring songs from RCA artist Christina Aguilera and Jive’s Justin Timberlake, who are on tour together. The CD contains the new Aguilera track “That’s What Love Can Do” and remixes of her “Beautiful” and “Fighter,” as well as Timberlake’s new song “Why, When, How” and remixes of “Rock Your Body” and “Cry Me a River.” The CD was made available earlier this week. Since it appears to be a specially made licensed set, music retailers do not decry this practice as vigorously as they do when labels give mass merchants exclusive windows on… Read more »

Ozzy Croons And Moons, Manson Rocks With Private Parts, Killswitch Kill At Ozzfest Stop – Review

Ozzy crooned, mooned and squirted his water guns, Disturbed bellowed, and Marilyn Manson vamped it up, but Ozzfest has always been just as much about the lesser-known acts, and Sunday’s show was no exception. Though bands like Kilgore, Pushmonkey and the perhaps aptly named No One have proven that Ozzfest exposure alone won’t make you famous, second-stage alumni System of a Down and Slipknot can attest that it certainly doesn’t hurt. Killswitch Engage’s potential spot in the Slipknot category seemed all but assured even before they appeared at Dallas’ Smirnoff Music Centre. Even though it was only the second show… Read more »

Kid Rock And Pam Anderson On The Outs?

Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson’s engagement and relationship are on the rocks, according to a People magazine report. When Anderson appeared at a recent Florida benefit for People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals, she wasn’t wearing the engagement ring that Rock bought her in April of 2002. Anderson told the publication, “The word that best describes me now is ‘free’….That’s all I will say. I’m a mom, and that’s where my life is at.” She also showed up at a party at the Playboy Mansion earlier this month without either Rock or “the rock.” She told the publication, “Assume… Read more »
