Garage-rock band The Strokes, riding high in the music charts on both sides of the Atlantic, are to headline the 2002 Reading and Leeds festivals, organizers announced on Tuesday. Turnout was thin Saturday for the second day of an event organizers promoted as a hybrid of music festivals and extreme sports. The Beyond 2002 Super Festival offered five stages of hip-hop and rock music, as well as motorcyclists, snowboarders and skiers. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame welcomed its first members from the new wave and punk eras on Monday night, inducting The Ramones and Talking Heads along with classic rockers Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, soul and R&B icon Isaac Hayes, versatile vocalist Brenda Lee and singer/songwriter Gene Pitney. No Doubt are taking their Rock Steady to the streets, beginning in mid-March. The ska-turned-reggae rock quartet will launch its first proper tour in support of its latest album, Rock Steady, with two offshore dates in Puerto Rico and Venezuela, on March 14 and 16, respectively, according to an Interscope Records spokesperson.
