The trailblazing early ?90s festival, Lollapalooza, will return this summer for the first time since 1997. When Perry Farrell first organized the touring event he did it in the true spirit of European music festivals. The first couple of years were an immense success melding lots of musical genres with bands like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Cypress Hill, Pearl Jam, Ice Cube, Lush, Ministry, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and more with cool merchandise and ethnic foods. While half the country is braving an intense Arctic front, some of those shivering are warm with the knowledge that summer can’t be too far away if the annual Vans Warped Tour trek is taking shape. Less Than Jake, Finch, the Ataris and Andrew W.K have been added to the lineup of the ninth annual outing, which will commence June 19, according to promoters. ‘NSYNC and Britney Spears took a distant back seat to dinosaur rockers Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and Cher this year when it came to concert ticket sales. As alarming as that might seem to Timberlake groupies, it probably has a lot more to do with the limited number of shows the young stars played than with any sort of pop backlash or classic rock revolution. Techno artist Moby was attacked by two men while signing autographs outside a nightclub following a radio station-sponsored holiday concert, police said. According to police and witnesses, Moby, whose real name is Richard M. Melville, was approached by the men about 1 a.m. Thursday outside the Paradise Rock Club. One of the men punched Moby in the back of the head and on the right side of his face, breaking the singer’s glasses and cutting and bruising his face. Dashboard Confessional and Jack Johnson played acoustic, and Beck and Coldplay celebrated Christmas, but otherwise KROQ-FM’s annual Almost Acoustic Christmas was a two-day, 20-act festival all about rocking. And the sold-out event was certainly crammed with rock and roll moments, particularly the announced live debut of Audioslave (they played a secret club show the night before), and an amusing rendition of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” orchestrated by Beck and the Flaming Lips and featuring Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba, Johnson and a horribly off-key Juliette Lewis. Papa Roach spent some time in the studio with the Neptunes last week, recording a song for the soundtrack to “Biker Boyz,” starring Laurence Fishburne and Kid Rock. Jacoby Shaddix and company shacked up with producers du jour Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo in Los Angeles’ Record Plant, according to a DreamWorks Records spokesperson. The resulting track, tentatively titled “Don’t Look Back,” is slated for the “Biker Boyz” soundtrack, due January 28. Sharon Osbourne is to go head-to-head with Queen Elizabeth II when she delivers an alternative festive season message on television on Christmas Day. Commercial station Channel 4 will broadcast an address from the wife of rock star Ozzy Osbourne at 3 p.m. (1500 GMT) on Dec. 25 – exactly the same time the queen is scheduled to give her traditional message on the BritishBroadcasting Corp.
