Religious Groups Attacking Corporate Avenger Lyrics

Corporate Avenger was dealt another blow this week when lyrics on their upcoming album ignited a rampage within a few national Christian groups. The band has been receiving death-threats due to the album’s content and it seems an ethical frenzy is beginning to snowball around the album. KOCH Records has been asked to halt the album’s release by several organizations and now the groups are taking their fight to the stores intent on stocking the title. Lead by The Promise Keepers and The American Family Organization, religious groups all across the country are banning together to try to keep the… Read more »

MTV Agrees To Air Eminem's Video

Compared to a year ago at this time, MTV and Eminem are locked in a very reluctant embrace. MTV has agreed to play a new video by Eminem’s group, D12, but only during the overnight hours and only after several days of negotiations with the rap star’s record label, Shady Records/Interscope Records. The video for “Purple Hills,” the album’s lead track, had to be cleaned up to minimize overt drug references, MTV spokeswoman Jeannie Kedas said on Tuesday. “We had a dialogue with the label and they provided us with an acceptable version for our air,” she said. MTV will… Read more »

D12 Not Sorry For The Things It Says On 'Devil's Night'

Even in its early days of release, Devil’s Night-the new album from D12, the Detroit rap group that includes solo superstar Eminem-is drawing criticism for its lyrical content about drugs, booze, weapons, raping grandmothers, having sex with pit bulls, and exacting violent revenge on enemies. This certainly isn’t news to Eminem fans, who have grown used to the “Parental Advisory” stickers that grace his albums, as well as Devil’s Night. And that certainly hasn’t been enough to keep it from blowing out of stores, with an expected debut at Number One in next week’s Billboard. MC Proof, who co-founded D12… Read more »

Radio is the same, because they want the maximum number of people to listen. So we’re working outside of… Read more »

Singapore To Janet Jackson Yes, We Mind

Singer Janet Jackson’s latest album will remain on the banned list in Singapore unless an offending track containing explicit lyrics is removed. “The distributor can release the album ‘All for You’ by removing the objectionable track ‘Would You Mind’,” a spokeswoman for the Films and Publications Department said. Local distributor EMI Singapore voluntarily submitted “All for You” for vetting and launched an appeal in April after authorities decided the album could not be sold. Information and Arts Minister Lee Yock Suan then upheld the ban. EMI is still trying to get the green light from Jackson’s management company to delete… Read more »

Stabbing Westward Survives Label Change

After six years and two modestly successful albums, the members of the hard rock band Stabbing Westward had every reason to be surprised when their label, Columbia, pulled the plug in 1999 – the day before the quintet was to leave for Hawaii to make a new album with producer Bob Rock. “It was out of nowhere,” says frontman Chris Hall. “All of a sudden they decided they needed to fund more money towards Ricky Martin’s wardrobe and dropped 12 bands in one day; ‘This rock thing doesn’t seem to be working out for us. We’ll keep Offspring and let… Read more »
