Americans Tune Into Patriotic Music

From the lakes of Minnesota to the hills of Tennessee, across the plains of Texas and from sea to shining sea, Americans are storming record stores for patriotic music, like Lee Greenwood’s country standard “God Bless the U.S.A.” Retailers said Wednesday that other in-demand artists include Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Ray Charles, Depression-era singer Kate Smith, and even Irish musicians U2 and Enya. The use of particular songs on television and radio fueled demand, said Dawn Bryant, a spokeswoman at Best Buy Co. Inc. -owned Musicland Group Inc., parent of the Sam Goody music retail chain. Greenwood’s Grammy-winning 1984 tune… Read more »

Hip-Hop Group Yanks Album Cover Depicting WTC Blast

Striking a macabre note, a new album cover by hip-hop band The Coup – whose music has a strong anti-capitalist bent – had until recently depicted the World Trade Center exploding, the band’s label said on Wednesday. “We changed the artwork as soon as we saw what had happened,” said Daria Kelly, director of sales for 75 Ark, the band’s label. Kelly said the picture, which eerily shows group member “Boots” Riley holding a detonator in front of the exploding towers, was yanked from the San Francisco-based company’s Web site at (http://www.75ark.com) by 9:30 a.m. PDT on Tuesday, hours after… Read more »

LA Award Shows, Madonna Concert Off; Studios Close

The nation’s entertainment capital shut down Tuesday as two major awards shows and a Madonna concert were canceled and most of Hollywood’s big studios closed their doors in response to horrific terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. It was the day the music died for the 2nd annual Latin Grammy Awards show, a glitzy music industry event which ironically had been moved to Los Angeles from Miami for security reasons last month. Organizers of the star-studded gala said the $4 million production, which was to have been broadcast Tuesday night in the United States and 120 other countries,… Read more »

Jay-Z Dogged By Bootleggers Again, The Blueprint To Come Early

It seems that if Jay-Z wants to keep his future albums from hitting the streets before their proper release dates, he’ll have to hire a security detail that rivals the size of the secret service team in his video for “Izzo (H.O.V.A.).” Bootleggers in New York started selling two versions of Jay’s album The Blueprint last week, and on Tuesday (September 4), Def Jam announced that it has once again pushed the LP’s release date up one week, this time from September 18 to September 11. The Blueprint was originally set for release September 25, though that was changed by… Read more »

Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Jason Lee, describing the scene as “a small disturbance,” said about 10,000 people were at the event, which was a promotion for fast-rising local rock band System Of A Down. When several hundred fans were unable to gain access to a fenced parking lot enclosure where the concert was due to take place for 3,500 people, they… Read more »

Aaliyah Wreckage Indicates Overloading

The twin-engine plane that crashed in the Bahamas and killed rising R&B star Aaliyah together with eight other people may have been overloaded by as much as 700 pounds, Bahamian police sources said Wednesday. Investigators derived that figure by weighing the victims’ bodies and the baggage recovered from the wreckage and calculating the weight of fuel aboard the twin-engine Cessna 402B that crashed Saturday in Marsh Harbour in the northern Bahamas, the police sources said. Although the Bahamian and U.S. crash investigators have not released formal findings, police have said they are investigating whether overloading or engine failure played a… Read more »
