Prince Makes Rainbow Connection On New Album

After making a name (or symbol) for himself by singing about Corvettes and cream, Prince will once again use his royal platform to tackle more serious subjects, namely religion and race. The Minneapolis singer hopes The Rainbow Children will be less a typical pop album and more a conversation starter, according to his spokesperson. The album – “Last December” and “The Everlasting Now” in particular – hints at Prince’s religious beliefs. The latter track, for example, asserts that, “Accurate knowledge of Christ and the Father will bring the everlasting now.” Although The Rainbow Children, which follows 1999’s Rave Un2 the… Read more »

System Of A Down upstage headliners – Review

Featuring two of the day’s most popular heavy rock acts – the masked Midwest horror-meisters Slipknot and the politically-driven Southland quartet System Of A Down – the nationwide Pledge of Allegiance tour features a couple bands whose recordings and performances are marked by uncompromising intensity. However, their musical styles and their levels of talent, as seen at the near-full Forum, share few resemblances. After a typically explosive set by German fire-tamers Rammstein, as well as opening turns by young groups Mudvayne and No One, System played their first L.A. show in two years and the first since the release earlier… Read more »

Jay-Z Makes It Three

Jay-Z’s The Blueprint continued its run at the top, selling 173,663 copies according to SoundScan, to spend its third consecutive week at Number One. The album edged the persistent Alicia Keys debut, Songs in A Minor, which still shows steady sales as it strides towards 3 million copies sold. Elsewhere the charts weren’t particularly inspiring this week. After welcoming ten new albums into the Top Ten over the past two weeks, only one debut made it this week, Totally Hits 2001, a compilation cut from the Now That’s What I Call Music cloth, that includes hits by the likes of… Read more »

Destiny's Child Mines Triumph From Trauma

Beyonce Knowles of the glittery vocal trio Destiny’s Child is no dummy. She knows that as wrenching as it was to go through the acrimonious departure of two co-founding bandmates, the attendant furor sparked welcome publicity for the group. In fact, since the spring of 2000, the reconstituted Destiny’s Child, comprising Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, has become a dominant pop music force. Three multi-platinum albums and a string of hits – “Say My Name,” “Jumpin’, Jumpin’,” “Survivor” and the “Charlie’s Angels” film theme – have kept the threesome at the top of the charts and made them a… Read more »
