Virgin vice chairman Nancy Berry leaves firm


Virgin Records vice chairman Nancy Berry, the estranged wife of ousted music executive Ken Berry, Tuesday became the latest casualty of a restructuring at ailing British music company EMI Group Plc, where the couple reigned over rock ‘n’ roll for several years. Alain Levy, who abruptly replaced Ken Berry as chief executive officer of EMI’s recorded music division last week, announced Tuesday that Nancy Berry will leave Virgin immediately after more than two decades at the EMI unit. EMI replaces Ken Berry with Polygram veteran


British music giant EMI Group Plc on Monday appointed former PolyGram president Alain Levy as the new chief of its recorded music division in a move aimed at reversing the decline at one of its main operations. EMI, home to such acts as Mariah Carey, Radiohead, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and David Bowie, said Levy would become the new chairman and chief executive officer at EMI Recorded Music, replacing Ken Berry, who had left the group by “mutual agreement.” Levy also will take up a position on the main board. Republic/Universal recording artist Powderfinger recently won six ARIA’s (Australian Record Industry Awards), more than any other artist this year, for their critically acclaimed album Odyssey Number Five. Lobos Celebrate Twenty-five


Los Lobos have entered the studio with legendary producer John Leckie to record their eleventh studio album and their first recording of new material since 1999’s This Time. The group plans to release the record in early-2002, to coincide with their twenty-fifth anniversary. PJ Harvey Wins British Music Award, Stranded In US


PJ Harvey won Britain’s most prestigious popular music award on Tuesday, but was unable to accept it in person after being stranded in the United States following devastating attacks on New York and Washington. The British singer-songwriter told the Mercury Award ceremony in London by telephone from Washington: “It has been a very surreal day. ‘NSYNC, Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child, Alicia Keys and Ja Rule are among the artists who are lending their voices this week to an all-star remake of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” to benefit AIDS research.
