KRS-One Attacks Pop Rap On Underground Compilation

Sure, everyone likes a little Jay-Z, Nelly and DMX party music now and then, but sometimes you just want a bit more to chew on, and for a lot of people that means turning to the world of underground rap. The Difference, a compilation of 12 new songs due in June on the Official Jointz label, is already catching a buzz thanks to “Clear ‘Em Out,” an alleged Nelly dis track by KRS-One featuring Tonedeff. According to the album’s producer, Domingo (Fat Joe, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony), when he asked KRS-One if the track was a direct attack on the St. Louis… Read more »

Blink-182 Side Project Shoots Video, Plan Shows

Singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge has gone hippie, boy band and even naked for Blink-182 videos, but for the first clip with his new side project, he’s sticking with punk rock. The video for Boxcar Racer’s first single, “I Feel So,” is performance-based with “an old-school punk aesthetic,” according to the band’s MCA Records spokesperson. DeLonge and his bandmates – Blink drummer Travis Barker, Over My Dead Body guitarist Dave Kennedy and bassist Anthony Celestino – filmed the clip on Thursday at a studio in Burbank, California, with director Nathan “Karma” Cox, whose résumé includes videos for Linkin Park and System of… Read more »

Rock Steady Show Leaves No Doubt About '80s Revival – Review

If Republicans, “Dukes of Hazzard” reruns and an abundance of heavy metal weren’t enough to convince you, No Doubt’s Rock Steady road show leaves little doubt that the 1980s are back. On the tour’s opening night, the Orange County ska-popsters mined flavors from across the retro-’80s spectrum, mixing driving hardcore and rasta riddims with slap-bass funk, new wave synth and pop queen balladry. With a punked-out rhythm section, two dread-stylie horn players, a guitarist straight out of a Duran Duran video and bare-bellied, necktie-wearing Gwen-just-wanna-have-fun-Stefani up front, they even looked the part. The drum set glowed under the Memorial Auditorium’s… Read more »

Nine Inch Nails, All That Could Have Been – Review

While for most musicians live albums are little more than concert souvenirs or holiday-season cash-ins, that’s not true of Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor has always seen his music as an endless work in progress. Releasing songs, EPs and albums in various versions, he has managed to turn his obsessive refusal to stop tinkering into a compelling aesthetic. What drives him is his inability after the “completion” of any project to see it in any terms other than how far it fell short of his expectations. So, And All That Could Have Been, NIN’s first live album, announces itself in… Read more »

Ben Folds thrives without Five – Review

A spirited performance and a clear delineation of material Monday helped Ben Folds re-establish himself – and prove the viability of a solo career – without the two musicians who constituted the “Five” in his old band. Songs from the new album “Rockin’ the Suburbs” dominated the first hour of music, save for the tragically comical “Karaoke Superstar,” and after a quick break, Folds took the stage solo for 25 minutes of earlier tunes until joined again by the band for “Song for the Dumped.” Folds, on record and in concert, has proven himself quite proficient with no numbers after… Read more »

Pearl Jam Guitarist Turns Over Solo Leaf

After performing in five acclaimed bands, Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard is savoring his independence with a solo project, the first time a member of the famed Seattle rock combo has struck out on his own. Gossard remains an integral member of Pearl Jam, which is on hiatus for most of 2001, but his new album “Bayleaf” (Epic Records) finds him relishing life in the driver’s seat, where he can write a song one day and record it the next. “… As opposed to write some songs and know that we’re going to get together in six months, and maybe… Read more »
