Chevelle had to delay work on their next album for two weeks earlier this month because frontman Pete Loeffler was called for federal jury duty. “Even rock stars can’t get out of it,” his brother, drummer Sam Loeffler, laughed. “We really believe that it’s our responsibility to do jury duty. A week after announcing plans to host an on-stage suicide by a terminally ill euthanasia advocate, Florida industrial rockers Hell on Earth have lost their booking at a Ft. Lauderdale venue. David Hundley, owner of the State Theater in St. Petersburg, said on Wednesday that he would not host next Saturday’s show. French telecommunications and entertainment conglomerate Vivendi Universal reported a narrower loss for the first half of the year and its chairman said he hopes to complete the planned sale of its U.S. entertainment assets to General Electric Co.’s NBC division in the second half of next year. Vivendi reported Wednesday it lost €632 million ($723 million) in the January-June period in contrast to a loss of €12.31 billion in the first half of 2002. Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives have wrapped up their investigation into the February 3rd shooting that left forty-year-old actress Lana Clarkson dead and have concluded that legendary producer Phil Spector was responsible. No charges have been filed yet, but the case has been turned over to the county’s district attorney. Spector was arrested around 5 a.m. on February 3rd after police responded to reports of a shooting at his Alhambra mansion. Clarkson was found dead in the foyer of his home and a handgun was retrieved from the scene. Spector posted $1 million bond the next day and was freed.… Read more »

Making a case for hard music, stadium tours in general and Metallica’s own status as a headliner, Summer Sanitarium 2003 goes down as a winner, taking in $46.4 million and drawing 683,472 headbangers to 19 dates. The tour reaffirms the box-office clout of Metallica, which is currently in the planning stages of an extensive headlining tour next year, tentatively set to begin in March. Phish will eschew an extensive fall North American tour in favor of an eight-show run, which will include a New Year’s Eve show at American Airlines Arena in Miami. The outing will also play host to Phish’s 20th anniversary concert, set for Dec. 2 at Boston’s FleetCenter. Additional stops on the tour include Uniondale, N.Y. (Nov. 28), Philadelphia (Nov. 29), Albany, N.Y. (Dec. 1) and three additional shows in Miami (Dec. 28-30).
