Modest Mouse Scores First Billboard #1

It was a tight race for the #1 spot on Billboard ‘s next albums chart, one that pitted enigmatic indie rock outfit Modest Mouse against soulful British songstress Joss Stone. And no matter how it all played out, someone was going to score the first chart-topping debut of their career. While Stone was a solid contender for the top spot, Modest Mouse take the crown on next week’s chart by a margin of 10,000 scans with their latest offering, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, selling nearly 129,000 copies. But Modest Mouse’s conquest was perhaps more significant because… Read more »

Bright Eyes frontman taking care of business

Conor Oberst sits in a dive bar, pulling on Winston Lights and throwing back intermittent gulps from a beer bottle. This isn’t the downtown New York- or Los Angeles-variety “dive” with the beautiful people and the perfectly curated juke box. This is the suburban Omaha sort, where a handful of pear-shaped, geriatric regulars sit drinking, solo, at two in the afternoon, mumbling conversations to themselves. The juke box plays only AC/DC. Oberst, better-known as Bright Eyes, is here — away from his handlers, bandmates and friends that dot the frigid Omaha landscape — to confront the perception, more or less,… Read more »

Senate Signals Support for Iraq Timeline

Defying a veto threat, the Democratic-controlled Senate narrowly signaled support Tuesday for the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq by next March. Republican attempts to scuttle the non-binding timeline failed on a vote of 50-48, largely along party lines. The roll call marked the Senate’s most forceful challenge to date of the administration’s handling of a war that has claimed the lives of more than 3,200 U.S. troops. Three months after Democrats took power in Congress, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) said the moment was at hand to “send a message to President Bush that… Read more »

Billboard Single Reviews: Lavigne, Good Charlotte

31 minutes ago Avril Lavigne’s soundtrack pit stop “Keep Holding On” from “Eragon” — top 10 at adult top 40 and top 20 at mainstream top 40 — shows the softer side of the artist . . . and basically a lady-in-waiting before reigniting her full-on persona via third full-length “The Best Damn Thing,” due April 17. Its launch single, the signature pop-punk anthem “Girlfriend,” spits beats per minute like a chainsaw, as Lavigne fires off, “Hey! Hey! You! You!/I don’t like your girlfriend/I think you need a new one/Hey! Hey! You! You!/I could be your girlfriend.” Although she has… Read more »

My Chemical Romance Leads 'Black Parade' Through Anaheim

It’s beyond obvious that the guys in My Chemical Romance have come a long way since the days when they were compared to the likes of Thursday and other bands in New Jersey’s emo/post-hardcore scene, if their concert at the Anaheim Convention Center on Sunday night was any indicator. Lead singer/songwriter/MCR mastermind Gerard Way and company entertained a sold-out crowd with an energetic and polished show that made clear their desire to be arena rock gods. However, the band members’ decision to not only play their latest album “The Black Parade” in its entirety but also perform the set in… Read more »

Legislators Propose "Driving While Texting" Law

OLYMPIA, Wash. — During the morning rush hour on Dec. 5, the 53-year-old driver of a blue Dodge Caravan was traveling north on Interstate 5 outside Seattle when he took his eyes off the road to scan an email on his BlackBerry, the State Patrol says. And that’s how he hit the white Mazda, which clipped the green Honda, which rammed the black Toyota SUV before spinning into the other lane and plowing into a city bus. Nobody was seriously hurt. But the episode sparked a chain reaction of a different sort in the state legislature, in the form of… Read more »

R.E.M., Van Halen Enter Rock Hall

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame swung open its doors Monday night to the latest batch of acts ticketed for music immortality, with the Georgia alt-rock icons and the dysfunctional Pasadena party band leading the way. They were joined by ’70s punk pioneer Patti Smith, ’60s girl group the Ronettes and the first hip-hop act to crash the party, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. The 22nd annual induction ceremony–which per tradition was held at New York City’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel–felt like an I Love the ’80 special, thanks to its two biggest inductees. R.E.M. received a warm introduction… Read more »

Small Internet Radio Hit by New Royalty Rates

Small webcasters are crying foul over new royalty rates they must pay for streaming recordings. After a two-year proceeding, the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) has set rates for commercial and noncommercial webcasts and Internet simulcasts, which some executives say will put them out of business. “This is going to be a major problem for the little guys,” says Robert Kimball, senior VP/general counsel for RealNetworks. “For small webcasters and companies that have built their models around free ad-based radio, it’s going to be an absolutely massive increase in royalties owed.” Under copyright law, owners of sound recordings must license their… Read more »

Fall Out Boy Get Bloody — For Tour Contest

It’s not a stretch to say that on their epic climb to the top of the Billboard albums chart, Fall Out Boy have shed their fair share of blood, sweat and tears – spending nearly five years crisscrossing the country in vans, buses and airplanes will do that to you . But on next month’s tour, they’ll be focusing primarily on the red stuff. Taking a (pretty awesome) page from the Kiss playbook – or, more specifically, the Kiss comic book – FOB will be tapping their veins for a contest, one in which they’ll mix their own blood with… Read more »
