Americans Tune Into Patriotic Music

Rapper Jay-Z Leads Pop Album Charts


Brooklyn-born rapper Jay-Z’s latest LP, “Blueprint,” led a torrent of new releases at the top of the album charts this week as America’s record buyers continued to shop despite Sept. 11’s terrorist attacks. The Island/Def Jam release flew off shelves last week, shifting nearly 427,000 units, according to data compiled by SoundScan. Sales of “Blueprint” were powered by the near-ubiquity of its first single, “H.O.V.A. (Izzo),” on both urban radio and music television. 'Glitter' Release Date Delayed


Nearly two weeks after Mariah Carey’s emotional and physical breakdown, the studio releasing her new movie has announced that the release date has been pushed back to next month. “Glitter,” which stars Carey as an aspiring pop singer, was to open Aug. 31. But 20th Century Fox said Monday it would now open Sept. 21. Studios delay release dates regularly. Record Labels Slap MTVi With Copyright Suit


A group of the music industry’s biggest labels has slapped a copyright infringement suit against MTVi, the online arm of Viacom’s music entertainment network. The lawsuit – filed by a group that includes Sony Music Entertainment, EMI Group and BMG Entertainment – is alleging that two sites within the MTVi stable are “knowingly and openly operating outside of the bounds of copyright laws” by offering free music on the Internet. EMI, Giga To Offer Music Online


Taiwan high-speed Internet access firm GigaMedia Ltd. said on Monday it would sell part of its music Web site to record label EMI Group Plc in a strategic alliance to jointly offer music downloads. U.S.-listed Giga said it spun off its Juice.com music site into a separate company capitalized at T$100 million and EMI would take a minority stake in the firm. Oh, what a week it was for music news. My head hurts just thinking about it. No, wait – that’s just my hangover. Twelve-time Brit Award winner and international chart topper Robbie Williams disclosed plans to release a version of “We Are the Champions,” recorded with the remaining members of Queen. Poor Freddie Mercury is pirouetting in his grave. Williams also told a British chat show he’s been wrestling with alcoholism off-and-on for the past four years.
