Tom Waits, Randy Newman, and Nancy and Ann Wilson of Heart filed a $40 million lawsuit against MP3.com on May 8th in Los Angeles citing copyright infringement. In question is MP3.com’s service My.MP3. The suit alleges that MP3.com willfully violated copyright law by copying “tens of thousands of compact discs onto its computer servers,” as part of the My.MP3 service, thereby converting the tracks on the discs into MP3 files that could be registered and listened to via any computer on the Web. There were few surprises when Blink-182’s Civic Tour 2001 rolled into the Warfield on Tuesday. Singers Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge belched and told poo-poo and pee-pee jokes. Kids crowd-surfed. Bras landed onstage. New songs – there were two – sounded like old songs. Even the encore was preceded by an assurance from bassist Hoppus that the band would be right back to play more songs. The members of ‘NSYNC traveled to the Cannes Film Festival last May to announce – with maximum fanfare – that they planned to film a movie together. Seattle, Wash.-based Loudeye has announced a non-exclusive licensing agreement with Sony Music Entertainment for streamed sound samples. Loudeye provides services and infrastructure for the authorized delivery of digital content. Under the agreement, Sony Music has authorized Loudeye to offer streaming samples from Sony Music releases, as well as thumbnail images of front-cover album artwork, through online retail web sites. The agreement encompasses samples from Sony Music’s entire active U.S. catalog, including releases from Columbia Records Group, Epic Records Group, Legacy, and Sony Classical. Major record labels planned to file on Wednesday legal documents opposing efforts by song-swap company Napster – now operating under a crippling injunction – to get a rehearing in a San Francisco appeals court. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled in February that Napster was infringing on copyrights and directed Judge Marilyn Hall Patel of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco to issue a preliminary injunction. Long-quiet pop superstar Michael Jackson will return to the spotlight in September with a massive concert tribute to his own career that will include a reunion with the Jackson 5 and collaborations with ‘NSYNC, Britney Spears and Whitney Houston.
