Stones' Svengali Recounts Street Fighting Days

Long before gun-toting rap stars roamed America, the first manager of the Rolling Stones was terrorizing “Swinging” London, throwing errant journalists out of windows and others off bridges. Accompanied by a thuggish bodyguard, teenage pop Svengali Andrew Loog Oldham was said to be quite the rogue 40 years ago: Sporting a cape, he would careen around the city in his Mini Cooper, speakers blaring from the roof of the tiny car. This is not all completely true – especially the bit about the cape – but the anecdotes and rumors metamorphosed into “facts” over the years, a consequence of the… Read more »

Blink-182 Deliver San Francisco Treat

There were few surprises when Blink-182’s Civic Tour 2001 rolled into the Warfield on Tuesday. Singers Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge belched and told poo-poo and pee-pee jokes. Kids crowd-surfed. Bras landed onstage. New songs – there were two – sounded like old songs. Even the encore was preceded by an assurance from bassist Hoppus that the band would be right back to play more songs. And yet the trio thoroughly entertained the capacity crowd of 2,500 fans with a 19-song, 75-minute set that mixed poppy punk rock with juvenile abandon. As usual, the jokes began before the music did,… Read more »

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s Web site – Where else in the world but the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival could Paul Simon, Mystikal, the Dave Matthews Band, Celia Cruz, Femi Kuti, the Neville Brothers, Van Morrison, Al Green, Lucinda Williams and more than 400 other acts mix it up with pheasant gumbo, crawfish bread, oyster po-boys and Cajun boudin? Record Labels Oppose Napster's Rehearing Petition

Major record labels planned to file on Wednesday legal documents opposing efforts by song-swap company Napster – now operating under a crippling injunction – to get a rehearing in a San Francisco appeals court. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled in February that Napster was infringing on copyrights and directed Judge Marilyn Hall Patel of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco to issue a preliminary injunction. Napster requested a rehearing shortly after the appeals court decision in February and has subsequently asked if it could supplement that request with material from proceedings at the U.S.… Read more »
