Ozzfest Ranks As A Top Concert Draw

When the wife of heavy metal god Ozzy Osbourne came up with the idea of a tour featuring the heavy hitters of metal and hard rock, the reaction from the concert industry was lukewarm, at best. “In my gut feeling, I felt that it would definitely work, because there was a huge void in the marketplace for it,” Sharon Osbourne recalled. “Not a lot of people in the market agreed with me at the time.” Certainly, no one can disagree with her now. Ozzfest, now in its sixth year, has consistently ranked as one of the top concert draws of… Read more »

Linkin Park To Join STP, Staind On Family Values

Eerie rap-metal sextet Linkin Park will join Stone Temple Pilots and angst-ridden hitmakers Staind on the third edition of Family Values this fall. “As it stands right now, it’ll be Stone Temple Pilots, with us playing before them and Linkin Park playing before us, and then two unknown bands that I’m sure will rock also,” Staind frontman Aaron Lewis said. A source close to Linkin Park confirmed the Southern California group is on the trek. Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland said in April that STP would top the bill. Family Values producer John Scher said Monday (June 25) that… Read more »

Eminem's Crew Has Familiar Message: Don't Take Us Literally

Like Eminem’s last two solo albums, the debut LP from his hometown crew, D12, opens with a public service announcement. But this time, the announcer suggests that anyone offended by words like “bitch” and “faggot” should turn off their stereos immediately. “We want people to know what the f they gonna hear for the next hour,” D12’s Bizarre said, speaking from the group’s home base of Detroit last week. “It’s our own ghetto public service announcement.” The sextet asks those who keep listening to Devils Night, due Tuesday, not to draw conclusions from what they hear – a request that… Read more »

Staind Leaves Mark On Album Charts

Radiohead’s highly anticipated fifth album posted the strongest first-week sales figures in the group’s history, but the mercurial British band failed to break the cycle of Staind’s album-chart dominance. “Amnesiac” (Capitol), the follow-up to Radiohead’s No. 1 debut “Kid A,” took second place this week, selling more than 231,000 copies, according to SoundScan data. That’s just 13,000 fewer units than Staind’s sophomore album, “Break the Cycle” (Elektra), sold in its third week on the charts. The hard-rock act has shifted nearly 1.3 million discs to date. Coming in just behind Radiohead was the Universal debut of the St. Lunatics, a… Read more »

MTV Will Give People Star Makeovers

If you’re sick of yourself, MTV can help you become one of your favorite music stars – at least for a little while. The cable music channel this week is launching a new show, “Becoming.” MTV will pick fans up in a limousine, give them makeovers, teach them choreography and let them recreate their favorite videos. Cameras will capture the transformation along the way, then show the finished product. The players were chosen from casting calls, fan Web sites, karaoke bars and college campuses. During the first week, fans will “become” Jennifer Lopez, Blink-182, Destiny’s Child and the Backstreet Boys.… Read more »

Staind Still Reigns; Moulin Rising

Movie soundtracks, led by the cover-version-heavy Fox musical “Moulin Rouge,” gained significant ground in the nation’s album sales last week. “Moulin Rouge,” featuring the hit single “Lady Marmalade” by Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Pink and Mya, moved up five spots on the pop album chart to No. 3 on sales of nearly 134,000 copies for the week ended June 3, according to data compiled from SoundScan. The Interscope album has moved nearly 450,000 copies in four weeks. The “Pearl Harbor” score (Warner Bros.) jumped 17 spots to No. 14, boosting its sales by 59 percent from the week before to… Read more »

Bottoms Up For Spinal Tap

When The Spinal Tap performed Monday night at Carnegie Hall, it was as if the thirty-four-year-old British heavy metal band was playing for the first time in three days. With the three founding Spinal Tap members – David St. Hubbins, on guitar and vocals; Nigel Tufnel, on lead guitar; and Derek Smalls, on bass – Spinal Tap played “Carnegie ‘Fucking’ Hall” as if they were the same band they have always been. And yet with accompaniment by longtime keyboardist Caucasian Jeffrey Vaston, and with Skippy Skuffelton accepting the suicide mission of drums, Spinal Tap actually are still the same band… Read more »

Ben Folds Now One

A mere six months after the dissolution of the Ben Folds Five, singer/songwriter/pianist Ben Folds has finished a new album, Rockin’ the Suburbs, which will arrive at your neighborhood CD outlet on September 11th. The album is in truth Folds’ second solo effort, but while 1998’s Fear of Pop was a largely experimental tinkerfest, featuring William Shatner among other guests,… Suburbs follows somewhat closer to the BFF trademarks: hooky piano pop, scrapbook nostalgia and character sketches. Recorded with producer Ben Grosse ( Fuel, Filter, the B-52’s) at Krell Studios in his adopted home nation of Australia, Folds played all the… Read more »

Durst Catches 'Runt' For Directing Bow

Limp Bizkit singer Fred Durst, eager to become a movie director, is now eyeing a different project on which to make his debut. Daily Variety reported on Monday that he would shoot “Life Without Joe,” a thriller described as “Deliverance” for the younger set. But Durst told Daily Variety on Tuesday he wants to launch his career with “Runt.” “‘Runt’ needs to be done now,” he said. “I made a band so I could direct videos and then direct a movie.” The $10 million project is the story of a teen who is endlessly taunted and persecuted by a trio… Read more »

DMC Releasing Mellow Solo Album

Expect a different kind of rhyme from Darryl McDaniels, better known as DMC of Run DMC, when his debut album is released later this year. McDaniels says his new record reflects the mellow mood he’s in these days. He describes it as “Bob Dylan meets Neil Young and the Rolling Stones.” McDaniels, 36, contributed very little to Run DMC’s new record, “Crown Royal,” which is filled with collaborations with such hot young artists as Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst. McDaniels said he stopped working on the record because he’s not into that kind of music anymore. “I wanted… Read more »
