Universal Music Ups Royalties for Song Downloads

Universal Music Group, the world’s biggest music company, has increased the royalties it pays artists on downloaded music, sources close to the company said on Thursday. Universal, home to Sheryl Crow (news), Sting and Limp Bizkit, has increased its online royalty rate and stripped out some charges, a move that could effectively double payments to artists for songs downloaded on the Internet, the sources and experts said. Officials for Universal, a unit a unit of Vivendi Universal, declined comment. The higher payments reflect an effort by the music conglomerate to meet artists’ demands for greater transparency in accounting while enlisting… Read more »

Slipknot Tour Cancellation Helps In Flames Craft Reroute To Remain

If the Hives are the first offensive in a Swedish rock invasion, then In Flames were the early reconnaissance team, quietly spreading their supercharged melodic death metal in whatever North American clubs would take them. Reroute to Remain, In Flames’ fifth album, is their latest missive, an album that’s heavy and pummeling yet accessible enough to potentially crack the limiting ceiling of the extreme underground. And if that happens, in a way, they’ll have Slipknot to thank for it. “We met Slipknot in Italy a couple of years ago,” vocalist Anders Friden relayed from a Detroit dressing room. “We just… Read more »

DMX Teams Up With Rage Against The Machine

DMX and members of Rage Against the Machine recently collaborated together, and no, the result is not called “Communist Party up in Here.” “I got a rock joint,” X bragged recently. “I did two songs with Rage Against the Machine. One song is ‘We Gonna Get It Right,’ and the other one is ‘Here I Come.’ I only met one of [the group members]. I pretty much got a CD and did the damn thing.” A management spokesperson in Rage’s camp confirmed the collaboration, and DMX’s spokesperson said the plan is to have “Here I Come” appear on the soundtrack… Read more »

Hives, Strokes Bring Fun Back to Rock

Pelle Almqvist never could understand the connection between loud guitars and being miserable. You’re up on a stage jumping around, making a loud noise with women adoringly gazing at you. What’s not to like? “It’s just such a naturally exciting and fun thing,” said Almqvist, lead singer of the Swedish rock band the Hives. Acts like the Hives, White Stripes, the Strokes and the Vines are leading a new vanguard with a raw, adrenalized sound best described as garage rock. And after a decade dominated by dense, morose grunge or the angry rants of Limp Bizkit and its sound-alikes, rock… Read more »

Fred Durst Tells Aussie Court He Warned Fest Promoter

Fred Durst reiterated claims of inadequate security on Monday during a hearing looking into the death of a 15-year-old concertgoer last year. From Los Angeles, the Limp Bizkit frontman spoke via videolink to the Glebe Coroner’s Court in Sydney, Australia, according to his manager, Peter Katsis. He claimed to have warned organizers of the touring Big Day Out festival of potential security problems at the Sydney stop, which took place January 26, 2001, and threatened to withdraw from the show if they weren’t remedied, following a similar crowd-crushing incident that occurred days prior in Auckland, New Zealand. “We definitely said… Read more »

System, Papa Roach Rage On Weenie Roast Stage While Jack Osbourne Holds Court

Not even his father could have said it better. “This is diet Ozzfest,” Jack Osbourne quipped backstage at the sold-out KROQ Weenie Roast. Southern California’s authoritative modern rock radio station hosted its 10th annual summer concert extravaganza on Saturday and, yes, it did offer a glimpse of the summer’s most anticipated tours, especially Ozzfest. Ozzy himself could not make the festivities, as his daughter Kelly was performing across the valley at KIIS’ Wango Tango radio show alongside the likes of Celine Dion and past Weenie Roast favorites No Doubt. Why wasn’t Jack there? “We don’t get along,” he clarified. Representing… Read more »

Fred Durst Defends Himself Against Misleading Playboy Article

Nine months after 9/11, Fred Durst is standing by his vow not to be a “hater,” despite what an interview in the July issue of Playboy might suggest. In the piece, Durst bashes Christina Aguilera, Kurt Loder and Filter’s Richard Patrick, but the interview was conducted long before the singer’s post-September 11 pledge to give peace a chance. “That interview is one-and-a-half years old that just got published with some extra comments about Wes [Borland],” Durst wrote on the official Limp Bizkit Web site. “I was really feeling negative about a lot of things back then.” One reason readers were… Read more »

Springsteen, E Street Band On The Rise After 18 Years

A good 18 years have passed since Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band recorded their last studio record, Born in the U.S.A. Now, following a hugely successful 2000 concert reunion, the group is about to release a new studio disc called The Rising. In their attempt to bridge all those fallow years with a single release they also appear to be going for a contemporary sound, hiring producer Brendan O’Brien, who is best known for working with groups like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine. The Rising comes out July 30 and features 14 new… Read more »

Fred Durst Taking Guitar Matters Into His Own Hands?

Limp Bizkit jammed with four finalists after their much-publicized guitarist audition tour, but now it looks like Fred Durst might be taking a cue from his Puddle of Mudd pal Wes Scantlin and handling both vocal and guitar duties himself. “I’ve been doing a lot of writing lately, all kinds of styles,” he posted on the band’s Web site. “I’m playing guitar, too, [and] I have a couple PRS custom guitars being made for me.” Durst added that Limp Bizkit have rented a “cheesy ’70s house in the flats” that they’ve soundproofed so they don’t bother the neighbors. “It’s pink… Read more »

Third Eye Blind Recruit Fred Durst, Andrew W.K. For Third Album

Even a fortune teller couldn’t have predicted the diverse range of guest talent that will appear on Third Eye Blind’s third album, Crystal Baller, which the band hopes will be ready for release by October. Of the 12 or so songs on the record – the group currently has 26 nearly completed tunes from which to choose – at least three will feature cameos. Limp Bizkit main man Fred Durst co-wrote and will play guitar on “Misfits,” party-meister Andrew W.K. will provide back-up vocals on “Messed Up Kid” and Kimya Dawson from the Moldy Peaches will sing on “Self Righteous.”… Read more »
