Members Of Korn, Pumpkins, Wilco Scoring With Movie Music

Rockers want to act, actors want to rock. What are you gonna do? For musicians who lack thespian aspirations, though, scoring a movie seems to suffice. Following in the footsteps of everyone from Bob Dylan and Jon Bon Jovi to Björk and Peter Gabriel, bandleaders Jonathan Davis, Billy Corgan and Jeff Tweedy and solo act Badly Drawn Boy are scoring some points with the Hollywood crowd this summer. Korn singer Davis teamed up with film scoring veteran and ex-Oingo Boingo keyboardist Richard Gibbs for the soundtrack to “Queen of the Damned,” released earlier this year. The pair co-wrote and performed… Read more »

Smiths Top Beatles in NME Music Icons Poll

Angst-ridden Mancunian rock quartet The Smiths have beaten off competition from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to be declared music bible NME’s most important rock group of the last 50 years. The band, renowned for its fatalistic lyrics and fronted by the misery-wallowing Morrisey, have not troubled the pop charts for more than a decade, but NME – the fanzine formerly known as New Musical Express – ranked them as more important than Elvis, the Sex Pistols and Madonna. Bands were assessed on the number of front covers, letters and features they generated as well as end-of-year polls. Beatle… Read more »

Pink, Drowning Pool Turn To One-Hit Wonders For Studio Aid

What would you say if someone told you Linda Perry, the unforgettable voice behind 4 Non Blondes’ 1992 hit “What’s Up?,” has become one of the hottest producers in pop music? Perhaps, in her words, “Hey, what’s goin’ on?” It’s a behind-the-boards comeback, that’s what, and all the one-hit wonders are doing it. Find it hard to believe Perry co-wrote and produced several songs on Pink’s Missundaztood, including the title track? Or that she’s behind upcoming projects from Christina Aguilera (see “Christina Aguilera: Not Your Puppet”), Solange Knowles and Courtney Love? Consider that Deep Blue Something’s Todd and Toby Pipes,… Read more »

Iron Maiden's Eddie Makes A Killer Toy

Once again, Todd McFarlane has immortalized one of the most beloved personalities of heavy metal as a detailed action figure. This time, however, it’s not a living musician he’s paying tribute to, but a character from beyond the grave. Yes, shriveled-faced, sneering Eddie – the Iron Maiden mascot – has been preserved in plastic. “With us as individuals, we’re not really interested in being made into action figures, because we’ve got Eddie,” Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson explained Tuesday. “We’ve got plenty of incarnations of Eddie to go on with for ages.” The first Eddie doll was modeled after the claw-bearing,… Read more »

Fu Manchu Bask In Kind Buzz At L.A. Tour Opener

If Fu Manchu were hoping to find a few friendly faces when unveiling new material Tuesday night at the Troubadour, the stoner rock outfit was undoubtedly stoked by the warm welcome it found. By the time the band hit the stage at 11 p.m. to kick off its U.S. tour, the club was packed and the crowd was by all indications “into it,” if otherwise meditatively subdued in their devotion. Those in attendance, including former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, were clearly devotees of the Fu, nodding their heads along to the band’s low-end celebrations of surfing, skating, B-movies… Read more »

'I Was Curious,' Slash Says Of GN'R Show He Was Banned From

Las Vegas wasn’t paradise city for Slash when he tried to check out Guns N’ Roses at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino late last month. It seems the band’s former guitarist wasn’t welcome to the jungle. Slash, who quit the group in 1996 and later formed Slash’s Snakepit, said he was in Vegas on vacation when he learned that GN’R would be playing there in two weeks’ time, on New Year’s Eve and two days before. He said he made some calls and got on the guest list for the December 29 show via the venue and the promoter.… Read more »

Gene Simmons Comes Clean

The smell of dirty laundry will fill the air December 11th when Kiss and Make-Up, the autobiography of Kiss bassist Gene Simmons, hits shelves. “It’s time for our children to find out that all was not well with mom and dad,” says Simmons. “From afar, Gene looks like the evil mean one; Paul looks like the romantic, thoughtful loving one; Ace looks like the spacey kind of innocent guy; Peter’s just cute and cuddly. Kiss and Make-Up is here to tell you that what you see is not necessarily what you get – that, behind the scenes, chemicals do in… Read more »

Clear Channel Circulates List Of Banned Songs

Clear Channel has identified 150 songs that are considered to be “lyrically inappropriate” for airplay in the wake of the terror attacks carried out in the U.S. on Tuesday, September 11. A Clear Channel spokesperson has confirmed that the list has been circulated among its stations across the country. The lyrical content targeted by the list includes any references to death, flying, September, or general destruction. The popular (and highly political) band Rage Against The Machine received the dubious honor of having their entire catalogue on the list. Pam Taylor, a spokesperson for Clear Channel stations in the San Francisco… Read more »

Freddie Say 'Relax': Limp Bizkit Remake Frankie Goes To Hollywood

Freddie’s already gone to Hollywood – now he’s taking his band to the Pleasuredome. Limp Bizkit have recorded a version of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s sexually charged 1984 hit “Relax” for the Ben Stiller film “Zoolander.” “It is the bomb, it is so dope,” said electronic artist/producer BT, who is scoring the movie, of the track last week. “It’s not really a cover – you’ll know what I mean when you hear it…. It’s sorta like if a band did a remix.” The original “Relax,” known for its “Relax, don’t do it” refrain, appeared on the dance group’s Welcome to… Read more »
