MUSICMATCH, Inc. today announced plans to provide an on-demand music service, based on its just-released MUSICMATCH Radio MX(TM) (announced separately today). Listen.Com Flirts With Napster Links


Rebel without a mandate? Listen.com fails to run its Napster strategy past either its major label investors or Napster Listen.com, a music directory service partly funded by major record labels, is shedding a little of its squeaky-clean image with a new song-search service that plugs directly into Napster’s software. The new service replicates all the music search and recommendation functions of Listen.com’s Web site but lives on an individual’s PC desktop. Middelhoff: Give Napster Time


Bertelsmann AG chairman and CEO Thomas Middelhoff has asked the record companies to “keep Napster alive” until an effective transition into a legitimate model occurs July 1. Otherwise, Middelhoff said Monday, 70 million users will be forced to go to other services – a move that he thinks would be a major loss for the record industry. However, if Napster fails to have a legitimate solution by July 1, Middelhoff said, the file-swapping service should be shut down.
