EMI sees holiday sales good in Europe, slow in U.S.

EMI Group Plc., the record company whose roster includes the Beatles, Janet Jackson and the Rolling Stones, said Wednesday holiday music sales are looking healthy so far this season in Europe, although still remain sluggish in the U.S. and Japan. The music business has suffered this year particularly in the United States amid a weakening economy, exacerbated by the Sept. 11 attacks. The industry has also blamed part of the industry softness on piracy, both from illegal copies of compact discs and free download services like Napster. “My impression is that the season is a little subdued in the U.S.,”… Read more »

Guns N' Roses Cancel European Tour – Again

Guns N’ Roses have again canceled their tour of Europe, but unlike other artists rethinking their overseas trips, Axl Rose doesn’t seem to be afraid of traveling – he’s afraid of not being able to work on the band’s never-ending new album. Earlier this year GN’R canceled a 14-city European jaunt scheduled for June, citing an unspecified stomach ailment suffered by guitarist Buckethead, and then rebooked the dates for December. But on Thursday (November 8), the band’s European agent issued a statement in which GN’R manager Doug Goldstein appears to take personal blame for the tour’s demise. “Following the euphoria… Read more »

He contrasted this to the U.S. situation, where the music industry had slowed down. Andy Fletcher, keyboardist in the technopop band that is still going after 22 years, said Europeans had had more experience of “terrorist attacks” than Americans and as a result were able to get on with their lives more quickly. “A lot of American bands and acts have canceled because they are not really used to terrorism in their own country,” Fletcher said… Read more »

Weezer Cancels European Tour, To Play U.S. Dates Through December

Last month’s terrorist attacks have played a hand in thwarting yet another tour, this time claiming Weezer’s planned 16-date European trek that was to begin in Copenhagen on October 9. However, a post on the group’s official website (weezer.com) suggests that other, unnamed factors played as substantial a role in the decision. “While the recent tragic events have indeed played a part in the fate of this tour by making world travel and airfreight more expensive, difficult, and (as many have warned) more risky, it is not those events that have led to this decision,” the note says. “A whole… Read more »
