'N Sync Documents Bad Old Days with New Video

‘N Sync is revisiting its formative years in a one-hour video comprising previously unreleased footage from the days when the pop quintet flew coach and stayed in cheap hotels. “The Reel ‘N Sync,” shot and edited by band member Joey Fatone (news), will be released on DVD and VHS on Nov. 5, a spokesman for distributor Trauma Records said Wednesday. Fatone, currently on Broadway with “Rent” and in movie theaters with “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” culled the clips from hundreds of hours of low-fi footage in his personal video archive. The video features no ‘N Sync songs. Instead it… Read more »

Universal Music to Review Web Assets

Universal Music, the music arm of Vivendi Universal and the world’s largest record company, will decide in coming weeks which of its Web music properties are worth keeping as the French media giant seeks to downsize, sources close to the company said on Thursday. Company representatives declined comment, but people familiar with the company said such a move was in line with Vivendi chairman and chief executive officer Jean-Rene Fourtou’s overall mandate to sell about $12 billion in company assets to reduce debt. “One of the things that will be happening in the next few weeks is that Universal Music… Read more »

Feds to Decide on Digital Radio

For generations, radio listeners have contended with static. That may be about to change if backers of digital radio have their way. The technology they want to roll out within a year promises custom news and information at the touch of a button, CD-quality sound for FM broadcasts and an end to AM’s hiss, crackle and pop. The Federal Communications Commission is to decide Thursday whether to allow radio stations to broadcast digital signals and how they should do it. Digital radio could be the biggest update to the medium since the debut of FM in the 1940s, said Ken… Read more »

Music Labels' Latest Anti-Piracy Trick: Free Tunes

In a fight to win back fans from the “gray zone” of online song-swapping services, the music industry is borrowing a trick from its nemeses: free music downloads. For one week beginning Thursday, music fans in Europe will be able to download, stream or burn onto their hard drives a selection of tracks from 6,000 artists including ColdPlay, Dido and Elvis Presley. It is part of a marketing ploy called “Digital Download Day” devised by British firm OD2, a technology company specializing in digital music distribution and co-founded by recording artist Peter Gabriel. Wait… Lance Bass Might Still Be Going To Space

Just when you thought you’d heard the last of it, it looks like Lance Bass’ space mission might happen after all. A source close to the project told MTV News that Bass will resume training at the Star City facility near Moscow on Wednesday, thanks to a nearly finalized sponsorship deal with Pepsi. To make up for the 10 training days Bass lost since being pulled off his regimen earlier this month he’s going to have to work 16-hour days and weekends. And if that’s not enough to keep him in the running for the October flight, his plan B… Read more »

Elvis Costello Flashes Cruel Smile To Fans in October

In the late 1970s, Elvis Costello wore a punk snarl to go along with his sharp suits and horn-rimmed glasses. Twenty-five years later, the prolific troubadour has replaced it with something more subtly sinister. Cruel Smile, a companion LP to Costello’s latest studio album, When I Was Cruel, features B-sides, rare cuts and live versions from that album, as well as a handful of fan favorites. Due October 1, the 14-track enhanced CD also includes the video for When I Was Cruel’s “45,” according to an Island Records spokesperson. Costello selected the tracks himself, most of which were previously unavailable… Read more »

Piebald Cancel Dashboard Tour For Vow Of Silence

For the past year, Piebald frontman Travis Shettel has been screaming for crowds almost every night, and when he’s not onstage he’s rarely lacking something to say. But now he’s got to keep his mouth shut for two weeks. The singer overexerted his voice while on tour, damaging his vocal cords. Last month he was diagnosed with a hematoma – a tumorlike collection of blood – that forced the band to cancel a couple of shows with Hey Mercedes. And though doctors felt that he was on the mend, his voice deteriorated. “When the tour ended, my voice didn’t feel… Read more »
