How Green Day's Dookie Fertilized A Punk-Rock Revival

Green Day will toast the release of American Idiot on Tuesday, but perhaps an even bigger cause for celebration these days is the 10-year anniversary of their breakthrough LP, Dookie. The modern-day classic not only launched the Bay Area punk trio into the mainstream, it opened the door to a mid-’90s wave of popped-up punk and provided a launching pad for the current crop of melodic pop-punkers. “[Dookie] changed my life,” confessed Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden. “It made me want to start Good Charlotte…. Right after that record came out, we were like, ‘We have to start a band in… Read more »

The band hid in a hotel bathroom to avoid the gunfire. “Chuck Pelletier made an evacuation plan, putting us all in groups to get us into armored tanks,” Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley told Rolling Stone. “He was… Read more »

Sum 41 Run For Their Lives During Violent Outbreak In Congo

Days after touching down in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sum 41 were forced to evacuate the African country when gunfire and explosions outside their hotel jeopardized their safety. Sum 41 Grow Up on New CD

“We’re getting old,” insists Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley, 24. It’s a theme the Canadian punk band comes back to repeatedly on their fourth album, due in late September. The band previewed new material during a brief layover in New York, where they rehearsed for upcoming summer festival concerts in Europe. Although the new songs have a serious bent, Whibley says they’re not necessarily out of character with the group’s early hits like “Fat Lip” and “In Too Deep.” “We’ve always written from our life experiences,” he says. “In the beginning all we did was go to school and party,… Read more »

Sum 41 Starts Writing Next Album

Sum 41 will start writing the follow-up to 2002’s Does This Look Infected?, next month in their hometown of Toronto. After putting the finishing touches on the songs this fall, Sum 41 plans to head into the studio early next year to record an album that’s a bit different from the rest of their material. Bassist Cone McCaslin told Rolling Stone, “It’s going to be more metal-ish-more of a Master Of Puppets thing, but Deryck Whibley can’t sing like [Metallica’s] James Hetfield, so there’s going to be a lot of choruses. Like ‘Still Waiting’ (from Infected)-heavy verses and melodic choruses.… Read more »

Sum 41 are anxious for sum vacation. The group originally planned on releasing “Over My Head, (Better Off Dead)” as the third single from Does This Look Infected?, but are now questioning whether they want to continue promoting the album. “We’re kind of like, dead right now, so we’re thinking we just might stop,” singer Deryck Whibley said. “We could put out another single and keep going, but we’ve been touring nonstop for a long time and we really want a break, so I think we might want to take six months off.” And there are other reasons Sum 41… Read more »

New Sum 41 Single Inspired By Pounding Case Of Regret

After a night of partying, the only thing worse than a hangover is a pounding case of regret to keep it company. Unfortunately Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley has woken up to the insufferable couple more times than he’d care to recall. While a headache and peaked feeling usually vanish with some aspirin and rest, embarrassment lasts a lot longer. And it’s that “what the hell was I thinking?” feeling that inspired Sum 41’s next single, “Over My Head (Better Off Dead).” “It’s [about] regretting something you said, usually the night before,” Whibley said. “Like, a lot of times, I… Read more »
