Berlin Techno Fest Attendance Down

Downtown Berlin’s main park was transformed Saturday into a sea of gyrating techno fans, blowing whistles and dancing ecstatically to booming beats as the German capital’s Love Parade hit the streets for its 14th year. Throngs of scantily clad revelers, many sporting garishly colored hair and outlandish outfits or clambering onto traffic signs and street lamps, crowded around 45 techno floats as they made their way from the edges of the Tiergarten park toward the Victory Column, the center point of the daylong event. Still, police estimated at only about 500,000 the number of people who turned out – a… Read more »

Eminem Lionizes Hailie, Kisses Off Debbie, Invites You To Square Dance

Marshall “Eminem” Mathers may liken himself and his daughter Hailie Jade to Bonnie and Clyde, but on the The Eminem Show, they’ll remind you more of Master P and Lil’ Romeo. “I swear to you she was so natural at it,” Eminem said of Hailie’s appearance on the track “My Dad’s Gone Crazy.” “I would tell her something one time and she would do it. She would do all the little sound effects and whatever. And she’s geeked to be on the song.” Shady said that many times when he makes music in one of his two studios he brings… Read more »

Train's Colin Dances With Merchant

Train bassist Charlie Colin was “dragged” on stage during a set by Natalie Merchant in Detroit last week (December 11) in order to dance with her, according to Train’s website (trainline.com). “He was living proof that musicians really do become musicians because they can’t dance!” Colin’s bandmates joke, adding, “Nah…he did fine.” Train and Merchant were sharing the bill of a holiday festival sponsored by a Detroit-area radio station. Train concluded its string of holiday festival appearances Monday (December 17) in Seattle. The following day (December 18) the group’s DVD, Midnight Moon, arrived in stores. The release captures Train in… Read more »

Jury Vindicates Dance Music in Precedent

No, this is not a story about an isolated incident. Although for years rock concerts have been drug and alcohol fests (come on, we’ve all been to them), for some reason dance music related events and clubs have recently been targeted by law authorities nationwide – from superclub Twilo in New York being shut down earlier this year to a yet unsubstantiated Federal case filed in New Orleans against club organizers. You even see the prevailing attitude on nightly news programs and in magazines like Time that dance music events are simply all about the drugs … perhaps all the… Read more »

Britney Goes Bald, Plays Tiny Dancer, Gets Caught In The Rain At Tour Kickoff

Almost a week late, Britney Spears finally kicked off her Britney 2001 Tour Thursday night after the flu and a kink in her pre-production held her up. Obviously the fans who flooded the Nationwide Arena expected the concert to be all about Britney – the person, that is. And sure, she explored some personal issues/interests, appearing with a bald head at one point, bungee jumping and fighting off faceless nemeses during her performance, but the singer kept true to her promise to make a large portion of the show about Britney, the album. She previewed several cuts off of her… Read more »

Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez plans to marry choreographer Cris Judd on Saturday, just seven months after she publicly split from rap impresario Sean “Puffy” Combs, according to New York tabloid reports Friday. UK Dance Genre Taking Root In U.S.

Word spreads by flyer and e-mail, drawing a small but dedicated corps of young hipsters to a nondescript club on a sleepy, dimly lit street corner. They are in search of deejays spinning a sound so new that some have crossed state lines for their first chance to dance to it. That sound is UK Garage, or Two-step, a dance genre from London’s underground club scene that has crossed the Atlantic – and not just to such likely haunts as New York and San Francisco. It’s also growing in popularity from Washington to Dallas and, in this case, Minneapolis, where… Read more »
