Fall Out Boy's Sound Has Changed, But The Weirdly Long Song Titles Remain

Following the release of Fall Out Boy’s 2003 full-length debut, Take This to Your Grave, the Chicago quartet was flooded with hyperbolic praise. The group, which was signed by tiny independent label Fueled by Ramen, was declared the “next big thing” by multiple media outlets, and its album sold more than 200,000 copies. So expectations were high for the band’s major-label follow-up, From Under the Cork Tree, which came out on May 3 and will debut at #9 on next week’s Billboard albums chart. Some pundits predicted a groundbreaking pop-punk expedition, and others awaited a heart-rending emo excursion, but Fall… Read more »

Yellowcard Finally Have A Concept For Their Non-Concept Album

With members of Yellowcard spending the last few months scattered across the country – in New York, California and Florida – what better place to reconvene than sunny Orlando, Florida? After all, it is the nation’s favorite vacation destination. “Yeah, we didn’t really come down here for vacation,” guitarist Ben Harper laughed. “We’re playing a couple of shows at [Disney World’s] Grad Nite, and we figured here was as good a place as any to finish up the saga [of] writing our new album.” Since January, frontman Ryan Key and bassist Pete Mosely have been living in New York, writing… Read more »

New FCC Chair Warns Cable; Congressman Advocates Jail Time For Indecency

In his first speech as head of the Federal Communication Commission, Chairman Kevin Martin strongly suggested on Tuesday that the cable industry clean up its act and shield children from indecent content. But Martin’s speech at the National Cable & Telecommunications Association’s convention in San Francisco was overshadowed by a fiery talk by Wisconsin republican congressman F. James Sensenbrenner Jr., who said he’d rather see indecent broadcasters thrown in jail. “When I first arrived at the commission, we received a few hundred complaints per year from parents,” Martin told conventioneers, according to a San Jose Mercury News report. “The next… Read more »

'American Idol' Gives Wrong Numbers, Calls For Revote

The “American Idol” final twelve (Photo: Kevin Winter) For the first time in “American Idol” history, the producers have called a revote. After incorrect voting phone numbers were displayed during the performance recap at the end of Tuesday’s show, the producers decided to throw out all of the votes and ask “Idol” viewers to revote Wednesday (March 23) night, a FOX spokesperson said late Tuesday. While the phone numbers that spell out IDOLS were correct for all contestants, the phone numbers listed in all numerals below the IDOLS number for contestants Mikalah Gordon, Anwar Robinson and Jessica Sierra were incorrect.… Read more »

Coldplay debuted three new songs from their currently untitled record that should be out this June. The tracks “Speed Of Sound,” “A Message” and “What If” were all played. Another new song “Fix You” had to be cut from the set list due to time. Coldplay have also said that the songs… Read more »

Garbage Breakup Ends With New LP – If They Did Actually Break Up

SANTA MONICA, California – It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from Garbage, but don’t worry, they didn’t break up. Or maybe they did. “It depends on which one of us you ask,” bassist/guitarist Steve Marker said during a recent visit from their Madison, Wisconsin, home base to Los Angeles. “I think we took a break, but some of us think that we broke up, so we haven’t even resolved that yet. We should probably talk about that. It got pretty weird between the four of us, and the music wasn’t really happening, so we took a break. There were times… Read more »

Yellowcard Feverishly Working On New Album… Starting Tomorrow

Yellowcard singer Ryan Key and his brand-new roommate – bassist Pete Mosely – recently witnessed something they had never seen before: an honest-to-goodness blizzard. It happened in New York a few weeks back, and while it certainly wasn’t the most epic of meteorological events (just one day of snow), it was enough to keep the Florida-spawned duo bundled up inside their apartment in Manhattan’s Soho district. Which isn’t really a bad thing, when you consider they moved to New York to begin writing the new Yellowcard record. So how many new tunes did they pen while Mother Nature unleashed her… Read more »

Conor Oberst Emerges From Below the Radar

Hoboken, N.J. – The brooding kid hailed as rock’s next musical genius slouches next to the bar at a tiny, smoky club. No one notices. Not even this crowd of indie music fans recognizes Conor Oberst, the 24-year-old sensation behind Bright Eyes who’s been pegged as this generation’s Bob Dylan, putting words and melody behind those tormented emotions the rest of us struggle to describe. He pops up on stage to join his friends, Yo La Tengo, for their encore. Then he slides back into the crowd, just another skinny guy in jeans and a black hoodie. But the days… Read more »
