Jack White Brawls With Fellow Garage Rocker At Detroit Club

It looks like Jack White’s broken finger has healed at least well enough to throw punches at other garage rockers. The White Stripes frontman was involved in a brawl with Von Bondies singer/guitarist Jason Stollsteimer Saturday night in Detroit’s Magic Stick club, according to police reports. Stollsteimer, who suffered a bloody nose and bruising to his right eye, was treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital and released. White sustained cuts to his left hand. The Von Bondies singer told police that White had tried to speak with him in the club, which was hosting a record release party for alt-country rockers… Read more »

Composer Who Worked With Metallica, Aerosmith Dead At 55

He was 55. Known for being something of a rock and roll classicist, in 1974 Kamen served as musical director for David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs tour, and he’s worked on orchestrations for Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Queen, Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan. Digital Sales Outpace Physical for First Time

For the first time since the chart’s rollout in July, the No. 1-selling song on Hot Digital Tracks bests the weekly total of the No. 1 title on Hot 100 Singles. With the rollout of Napster 2.0, sales data of digital tracks takes another step north, resulting in OutKast’s “Hey Ya! (Radio Mix)” selling 8,500 downloads compared with 7,500 physical singles scanned of MercyMe’s “I Can Only Imagine.” This occurrence, if not the speed with which it was accomplished, was predicted in most music quarters once the business model of digital distribution was in place. While it appears that the… Read more »

All-American Rejects Make The Honeymoon Last On 'Time Stands Still'

From Jim Croce’s “Time in a Bottle” in the 1970s to Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” in the ’80s, and R. Kelly’s “If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time” a decade later, songs about stopping time are as numerous as sands in an hourglass. The All-American Rejects extend the time-honored tradition with their third single, “Time Stands Still.” The song, which follows “Swing Swing” and “The Last Song,” is similar to the themes that flow through the Oklahoma band’s self-titled debut album in that they’re all about singer, bassist and lyricist Tyson Ritter’s girl problems. But… Read more »

Def Jam Hasn't Slowed Roadrunner Indie Spirit

It’s been 2-1/2 years since the Island Def Jam Music Group acquired a 50% stake in Roadrunner Records. However, the longtime rock-metal independent label still feels like an indie despite its major label parent, president Jonas Nachsin says. “In terms of the Roadrunner’s indie spirit, I don’t think we’ve lost any of that,” Nachsin says. “When the partnership was done, I think the first thing that was decided was not to do anything, which was a very sage and important game plan because when something is working, the last thing you want to do is start to mess with it.”… Read more »

Prince, Mellencamp Headed for Hall?

This news is either going to ease Prince and John Mellencamp’s possible midlife crises, or agitate them: They’re nominees for induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The late George Harrison and Jackson Browne are other first-timers on the ballot determining the hall’s class of 2004. Others looking to gain admittance to the Cleveland-based mecca after coming up short in previous voting, include: Punk pioneers the Sex Pistols; Ozzy Osbourne’s first family, Black Sabbath; “Freebird” purveyors Lynyrd Skynyrd; ZZ Top, the bearded rockers who were once MTV’s unlikeliest video stars; and poet/rocker Patti Smith.
