Enya's Flow Is Up There With Ja Rule, Bubba Sparxxx

Ever since the success of her 1988 single “Orinoco Flow,” Enya’s been one of the world’s most popular artists, quietly selling more than 50 million albums while staying, for the most part, out of the spotlight. But now, with her latest single – the gently reassuring “Only Time” – becoming part of the soundtrack to the post-September 11 world, Enya’s very much at the center of attention. The singer’s elegant, evocative and ethereal A Day Without Rain, released almost a year ago, will hit #2 on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart, right between rappers Ja Rule and Bubba Sparxxx.… Read more »

'NSYNC's Lance Bass Doesn't Care If He Beats Heather Graham

“You’re going down [Heather],” Lance Bass joked earlier this month about his first feature film, “On the Line,” making more money when it opens October 26 than Heather Graham’s “From Hell,” which is scheduled for release the week prior. “Nah, I’m so new to this, I don’t know who’s opening up against us in the week so I don’t know what good numbers are, what bad numbers are. As long as people go see it and enjoy it that’s all I care about.” In the movie, Bass stars as Kevin Gibbons, a guy who’s too shy to ask for the… Read more »

Ludacris Moufs Off

Ludacris’ life was forever changed with last year’s 2.7-million-selling Back for the First Time, and the Atlanta rapper is ready to celebrate with the follow-up album, Word of Mouf, due out November 6th. But Ludacris isn’t about to forget the long struggle that got him here. The track “Cold Outside,” he says, was written with that idea in mind. “No matter how much money I ever get,” says Ludacris, “I’m going to want to provide for my family and never have to go back to really struggling. You don’t ever want to go outside, you don’t ever want to be… Read more »

Matthews Fights Hunger

The September 11th terrorist attacks pulled dozens of high-profile musicians into spirited rounds of fundraising and flag waving. But Groundwork 2001, a benefit to alleviate hunger, began Sunday night, showing that such charity existed before the attacks and will presumably continue after the furor dies down. The opening show was suitably eclectic, featuring Daniel Lanois, Philip Glass, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Emmylou Harris and Dave Matthews. After four smaller shows during the week – featuring Joe Strummer, the Wallflowers, Heart and others – next Monday’s grand finale boasts R.E.M., Pearl Jam and Alanis Morissette, with Gwyneth Paltrow as the… Read more »

For some, the last two weeks have been a time when the role of music abruptly shifted from the indispensable rhythm of life to a frivolous, even annoying, specter of sound. The occasion was dreamed up on September 13 by the club’s owners, Tom Sisk and David Baxley, when… Read more »
