Eminem’s music publisher wants a bigger slice from Apple. Eight Mile Style and a co-plaintiff, Martin Affiliated, are suing Apple, claiming they never authorised the use of 93 songs in a downloadable format on Apple’s popular iTunes service. The non-jury trial is expected to start Thursday in the rapper’s hometown of Detroit, unless a settlement is reached Wednesday with the help of US Magistrate Judge Virginia Morgan. Eight Mile also is suing Aftermath Records, which controls the recordings in question, saying it didn’t have the right to make deals on digital downloads. It’s unclear from court documents just how much… Read more »

MGMT casts Joanna Newsom, monsters in 'Kids' video

Psych-pop duo MGMT has finally unveiled the video for its Oracular Spectacular track “Kids” nearly 10 months after it was released as a single. The 2008 Artist To Watch and last year’s Hot Band Everyone Wants To Be In has assembled a true labor of love: a six-minute video starring Joanna Newsom as a mom who totes around a toddler who sees monsters worthy of GWAR’s percussion section everywhere he looks. (The band insists no children – and presumably no monsters or harpists – were injured during the shoot.) MGMT said that the video has been in the works for… Read more »

Apple/Palm set for epic battle

Not much rattles Apple. Disciplined and focused, the company lavishes attention on its own elegant products and rarely deigns to discuss rivals. Yet here was Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer and designated stand-in for ailing CEO Steve Jobs, erupting during an earnings call in late January at the mere mention of a pip-squeak competitor. The pest in question was Palm, the fallen pioneer of handheld digital organizers, which two weeks earlier had unveiled a new smartphone, the Palm Pre, to rave reviews. Not only did the Pre have features the iPhone couldn’t match – snazzy multitasking, universal search, a… Read more »
