Geek Girl Riot is back with an avalanche of new TV, movies, and games to get you up to speed. Our Rioters also chat with directors Mariama Diallo from The Other Black Girl and Todd Haynes from May December.
Todd Haynes from May December
Julian kicks off the show by talking about his time at the New York Film Festival for the premiere of May December, which is in theaters on November 17th and on Netflix on December 1st. This leads into Julian’s interview with the film’s director Todd Haynes—they talk about the film’s use of music and the way shots are used to cause discomfort.
Mariama Diallo from The Other Black Girl
Then it’s time to switch over to Hulu’s The Other Black Girl, which you need to binge-watch immediately right after this (and read Sherin’s review in the meantime). Sherin sits down with director Mariama Diallo to talk about bringing her own influences into the storytelling, working with the incredible team behind the series, and what scene she’s most excited for fans to see.
Film Roundup: Strange Way of Life, Priscilla, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Persian Version
There are so many new movies our brains are FULL, y’all. Sherin and Julian start their ever-growing list with Strange Way of Life, Pedro Almodóvar’s first English short film starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal. Then he takes us through Priscilla, directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi, and how it explores the often uncomfortable layers to the eponymous teenage girl’s relationship with Elvis Presley.
Sherin also shouts out Killers of the Flower Moon (read William Goodman’s review), before Julian switches to The Holdovers, a surprising and enjoyable story about the themes of found family. Sherin then shares her review of The Persian Version, a movie she loved and wants you to love too.
TV Roundup: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Blue Eye Samurai, Invincible, Black Cake
Don’t think we neglected our TV watching—we got’chu: Julian starts this round of roundups with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the chaotic & explosive new kaiju show smashing its way to Apple TV+ on November 17th. Sherin trades off with Blue Eye Samurai, the gorgeous animated revenge story coming to Netflix on November 3rd.
Our Rioters take a drive-by teaser shot at Invincible S2, before closing out the TV goodness with Black Cake, telling a complex and heartbreaking multigenerational tale based on the novel by Charmaine Wilkerson—watch it on Hulu on November 1st.
Game Roundup: Spider-Man 2 on PS5, Mortal Kombat 1
But wait! There’s more: There are some games that have kept us Rioters glued to our screens too. Julian tells Sherin about Mortal Kombat 1, a reboot that’s definitely worth your while. He teases some of the returning characters, the differences in gameplay, and the intriguing storytelling that will soon include a link to Invincible. Then he closes out by sharing a bold statement about why Spider-Man 2 is the best Spider-Man story we’ve seen in years.
