The Game Awards, Wonka, Doctor Who, Genie, Mr. Monk’s Last Case, Reacher, WAFCA Awards

Sherin and Julian kick off awards season in style with The Game Awards and WAFCA Awards. They also get into a bunch of new shows & movies to give your binge-watch list some holiday sparkle.

The Game Awards, Wonka, Doctor Who, Genie, Mr. Monk’s Last Case, Reacher
Sherin kicks off the show in a fiery way thanks to the rage burning in her heart. Julian thinks he’s more chill this week…until he starts talking about The Game Awards and its highs and surprises—and its lows and snubs. That leads them into Wonka, which they have a lot of differing opinions about (you can read Sherin’s review here). Whatever your take on it, Wonka has got everybody talking and it’s here to entertain—and Sherin shares an interesting fan theory about its ties to Doctor Who.

Next up Sherin talks about Genie, the new Peacock movie starring Paapa Essiedu and Melissa McCarthy that features a fresh twist on genie lore. Then she jumps over to another Peacock flick, Mr. Monk’s Last Case, a sweet if misguided tribute to the beloved detective, which you can watch now. And to close out the segment, Sherin celebrates the return of Reacher on Prime Video—stay tuned for more of her thoughts on RIOT-US.com!

WAFCA Awards
Sherin and Julian are members of the Washington Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA), which means they voted on the most deserving films of the 2023 WAFCA Awards. They go through the nominees and winners, comparing notes & votes. There were naturally some big-name winners—Barbenheimer truly ruled 2023, after all—but our Rioters had differing opinions on their faves of the year. What were your picks? Let us know!
