Interviews with Colman Domingo and George C. Wolfe for Rustin + The Marvels, Scott Pilgrim, Saltburn, Poor Things, May December

Mae Abdulbaki is back. She joins us for a new team-up called the SHERIN & MAE CAFE. But first, Sherin and Julian talk with the “fairytale prince” known as Colman Domingo AND the theater and film legend George C. Wolfe. After that, Mae and Sherin sip coffee/tea and enjoy a couple of sfeehas from Yellow Cafe in Georgetown. The perfect snacks for their discussion of some seriously: “pleasing,” “cute,” “alternate,” “excessive,” “insidious”, and “unsettling” movies and streaming series.

After that, it’s all about the movies and a new version of a classic graphic novel. Keep scrolling to read what and to catch a few of Sherin’s thoughts before you tune in.

RUSTIN
in theaters now

Sherin said this in the interview but we have to say it again, “There’s a brightness to Rustin that doesn’t veer away from the consequences at the intersections of Bayard Rustin’s life. It allows the story to breathe like jazz.”

THE MARVELS
in theaters now

While you listen to the show, read Mae’s take on The Marvels’ 10 Biggest Spoilers over on Screenrant. For more, check out Sherin’s review about the superhero movie she calls, “cute, weird, and wonky with PowerPuff vibes.” Which must have resonated because she got quoted by The Mary Sue. It’s true, The Marvels is probably the closest we’ll ever get to a Powerpuff Girls live-action!

SCOTT PILGRIM
on Netflix Friday, November 17

“Among comic fans, Scott Pilgrim is legend. Creator Bryan Lee O’Malley touched something in us that allowed us to enjoy how absurd the transition from kidhood to adulthood can be—especially when you’re a geek who’s falling in love. To prep you for the new animated series (coming to Netflix on Nov 17), Here’s what I can say: The creatives do something that more adaptations should consider: They take an alternate path! This means classic fans and new ones can experience a sense of discovery BUT it’s also a choice that expands on the promise of the Scott Pilgrim Universe. That’s all I can say for now; if you want our review you’ll have to wait a little longer.” ~Sherin Nicole, Geek Girl Riot on idobi Radio

SALTBURN
in theaters on Wednesday, November 22

Emerald Fennell has created a neo-gothic bonfire—a scion to Gatsby, Ripley, and Six Degrees of Separation—that indicts the excesses and peculiarities of old-money wealth while exposing its unguarded underbelly. In the end, it isn’t about slaying the dragon as much as dissecting its anatomy. Lucky for us Keoghan seethes, Elordi sparkles, and Pike is mischievous. Which makes this invasion of the upper echelon go down like bourbon that’s been spiked. ~Sherin Nicole, Geek Girl Riot on idobi Radio

POOR THINGS
in theaters Friday, December 8

This is a daringly demented yet exuberantly raw pop-up fairytale that’s been cross-bred with first-wave science fiction. It is a strangely spelling tale that Mary Shelley and her feminist mother would likely cheer for. A kind of fringe and risky filmmaking that makes seeing movies exciting again AND there are award-winning performances, directing, and below-the-line work throughout! If only there had been a few more snips with the storytelling shears to shorten the experience, we’d have had something new perfection. ~Sherin Nicole, Geek Girl Riot on idobi Radio
