On this week’s Geek Girl Riot: Sherin and Julian, your dynamic duo do a round-up of all the movies, tv shows, and film festivals you’ll want to watch the week. From I’m A Virgo and Secret Invasion in the first segment, they jump into Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and The Blackening. Wrapping things up in the third segment, they get into Asteroid City, the Awesome Con Short Film Festival, Tribeca 2023, and whatever else is on their minds. Which includes Black Adam outperforming The Flash.

I’m A Virgo and Secret Invasion
Julian gives a full preview for the new 7-episode absurdist satire from Boots Riley that is streaming on Prime Video. Meanwhile, Sherin calls I’m A Virgo, “A modern take on folklore where things get very real in a fantastical Bay area…and it works so well.” They also praise Riley’s developing style. Then the dynamic duo turns to Marvel on Disney+ with Secret Invasion. Sherin says this, “Espionage drama has a great cast, and Samuel L. Jackson makes everything better, but the series hasn’t caught fire yet.” Julian, however, says it’s better than a lot of the Marvel shows.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and The Blackening
Several of your GGR hosts had a big date night with Harrison Ford, when they went to the E Street Cinema in DC to see the newest installment of Indian Jones. Drew, Soma, Sherin, and Julian all had good things to say—fun stuff all the way around. Although Sherin thought it was too long and a bit messy in parts, she said, “An Indiana Jones movie is a Rube Goldberg machine of disaster—and that’s why we like it.” In a completely different genre but equally fun, Julian and Sherin talk about how good, hilarious, and witty The Blackening is. And they hope more people will see it. So, go now!

Asteroid City, Hijack, the Awesome Con Short Film Festival, Tribeca 2023
Wes Anderson is a master of the absurd with a distinct style and his latest movie, Asteroid City, shows off his journey as a filmmaker. Sherin says, “Asteroid City is a pop-up-book fable on film, but one that has something it wants to say about family and grief.” And Julian has a full review on RIOT-US (Geek Girl Riot Central) to get you prepped for this whimsical ride. The pair moves on to film festivals and all the goodness from the Awesome Con Short Film Festival and Tribeca 2023. Sherin even has a more in-depth take here. Finally, Sherin previews the new Idris Elba thriller coming to Apple TV+. It reminds you of 24, where each second unfolds in real-time, and it keeps the thrills on high alert throughout.

Tune in to Geek Girl Riot on idobi Radio every Tuesday at 11pm ET / 8pm PT
